It's only good if you like Solaris and have supported hardware. I don't care much for Solaris (or is it just Solaris admins that are getting on my nerves today? :p), but I do have the hardware. :p

They're trying to get back some of the sales they're losing to Linux, but they don't realize the price is only a small factor in why Linux is gaining popularity.

Hence, it's good for me :)

Aside from that, I agree with Nothinman.

I might just mess with Sun Solaris for fun.

Nothing's been stopping you from doing that for years now, the only difference is that now the source will be available as well as the OS for free.

Maybe Microsoft will try this approach. I doubt it but one can always dream.

It would never happen, they're not losing enough money to Linux yet. And even if they were, they would have to strip out all of the code that they don't own and it would take a long time to do that without crippling the system.

Not to be a thread crapper bu this is old news. I downloaded the prerelease version from Sun some time ago when they first announced it was going to be free. I downloaded the x86 version but haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

The prerelease I tried was pretty buggy.
Couldn't even start CDE on an Ultra5 I installed it on.

The final works fine though.
