Ha, I told my wife she could spend as much as she wanted on a dress within reason (under 8 grand) and she only spent about $800 bucks....she is very very practical and really does not care for pricy stuff...

I told her I would get her a pair of one carat diamond stud earrings and she said no and only wanted half that size...

I guess I lucked out but sometimes it sucks as I want to get her something nice and she just doesn't care...

Sizable argument ensues. $4000 is a bit absurd when you consider that the budget for the ENTIRE recpetion is supposed to be $8000. Now I'm ready and willing to kick in money over and above that, but that much for a dress that, let's face it, will never be worn again is simply absurd. I even pulled the VERY dirty trick of pointing out that as the majority earner in the family by a long shot it was a shite thing for her to frivously spend what really amounts to MY money.
She's crying, I'm fuming, but I tell her whatever you need to do, do, but remember that we've got more important things to waste money on like a house.

Next day....she comes home.
"I have found the most beautiful dress, it's so perfect, so beautiful blah blah blah blah."
How much?
$500! FIVE. HUNDRED. DOLLARS.

Bigass fight, and she ends up spending LESS than was budgeted.
Pass the beer nuts.
Good job, jzero

Heh, where'd she get it? My fiance got a dress she loves at David's Bridal for about that price.

hey, that's like me... i'm not into lavish dress, jewelry, etc., but my dress had to be custom made because my wedding is of a religious nature. (no way did i want to spend as much as the dress cost!)

if it were up to me, i'd have gotten married already in central park and have it catered by the pizzeria. :p

My solution to all of this was to get my girlfriend pregnant and marry her at the justice of the peace.

The drama of an unexpected pregnancy easily distracts everyone, and you can slip a marriage in there without anyone complaining about anything.

Worked for me...

Though now it's seven years on, and I'm starting to hear about a "renewal of vows"... :(

My fiance is the same way, made me buy a smaller diamond that I was going to buy for her engagement ring because she thought it would look too big on her hand.

She was actually working in the alterations dept. at David's Bridal. Scored a 25% employee discount AND they gave that discount to all the bridesmaids in addition to the discount they got for all buying together.
Not too shabby.

The cost fight was even more perplexing when considering she had spent the last few months working a second job that she pretty much hated because of the discount.....why would you go somewhere else?!

Well, it all worked out :)

I'm shedding a single manly tear for the money this will cost me.

...sigh... I'm working on getting her to put it off for a ten year anniversary thing...

Just point out the obvious - you made a lifetime commitment...the only reason to renew the vow is if you died...and then came back to life.

Or if someone broke the vow....and it wasn't you, so by process of elimination....must be HER!

This is a good plan. Try it and let me know how it goes. You have a comfy couch?

Your rational argument is worthless to me. This is my wife we're talking about. If I were married to a man, it might fly. :p

That's just plain stupid. I'd refuse to pay, wouldn't want to be married by someone who would throw away my money like that. FSCK THAT.

I am opposed, on many levels, to young people financing their own expensive wedding. That "special day" will be the biggest rip-off of your lives, and will saddle you with debt for years. But hey, if you want to start your lives together off on the wrong foot, feel free...
not every young couple is poor or will be in debt for years. We had savings for a reason. I will have paid my wedding expeditures off by May... that's about 8 months from when we got married. It's not about age, it's about planning ahead.

I'm not sure I understand what's going on here. You grumble that it's expensive, but then you say her parents will probably pay for it. I think what you should really be lamenting here is the fact that your marrying someone with outrageously expensive taste. I hope you can afford the lifestyle she's likely anticipating.

If she doesn't choose to keep it you can make some of that cost up. I have agreed with Lola that if she doesn't want to keep her dress after the wedding that we would use the money she gets for selling it to upgrade her diamond.

On a lighter note, we got our first gifts :D.

Well, with that getup you won't have to pay for the photographers / videographers either...
