Wow....at least it's obvious who did it. The ones that are tricky are when they charge 20,000 random people $1.20 or something that might be less easy to find or trace.

no personal checks outstanding period. every one I wrote has been cashed. definately used online. weird as hell.

i'm pretty psycho about this too, i shred everything with my name on it, including CC apps, all bills, all CC receipts, everything.

and i'm tech savy, always inputting my own addresses, never opening crap emails, phishing emails etc.

any other ideas how?

What have you paid online recently? Maybe you accidently entered your info on a fake website and never realized it?

Was it taken out as an electronic check? It's rediculously easy to do to people. And none of the banks I work with will block them. I've asked.

the bank said that someone used the routing number and acct number to do it online. Is it really that simple to use someones account. just input the routing number, acct number, and your name?

if it is, thats insane.

I just tonight signed up to pay my credit card online. The only info I needed to make a payment was the routing number, account number, and the name of the bank. All this info you can get off a check. Theoretically I guess I could have entered in someone elses info and paid my cc from their account. :Q

Yep that's all they need. And the name of your bank.

it seems like a lot of places do a test deposit/withdrawl to verify linked bank accounts these days, but i know when i signed up for online payments for my CC years ago, there was basically no verification of any kind. anyone with one of your checks could do it. scary! but as someone said, at least the bank ought to be able to track the person down.

I don't want to go into detail, but let's say you bought something at a flea market and paid with a check. Or someone paved your driveway and you paid with a check. Someone who you really don't know well and/or would be difficult to track down again. That could be the problem, and it has nothing to do with the checks you wrote being cashed.

but wasnt that pretty dumb of them to pay their own credit card...

i wonder if its a case of them inputing in their number and transposing or being off by a number accidently and it turns out to be they have entered your account by mistake.

good idea, but not a chance. I have only written two checks every month for the past 2 years. one for rent and one for the electric company (b/c their damn online system sucks). everything else is CC and cash.

I don't think they even need the name of the bank. But yeah. Like I said, too easy.

I think that you should be required to set up electronic transfers like that with your bank before the bank honors them. It drives me nuts.

How do you know your account information wasn't compromised on your financial institution's side?

one of the reasons its so easy is becasue its so easy to trace who does it. You would have to be retarded to try somethign like that and think you would get away with it.

but yes, it is a hassle, and they should make it harder to set up auto-pays on cell phone accoutns, credit card accounts, etc...

It's true. My bank warned me about this when I reported my ATM card missing when I lost my wallet w/ my account number in it.

What if you bought something that they don't actually need a shipping address... like a 'pay-per download' computer game? (EA lets you pay and download battlefield2)
I don't see how that could be tracked? Unless they look up IP records and contact your ISP. Chances of getting EA to do that for you probably is unlikely.

This is just an example. Some high-end software you can pay and download online can cost $600+
