<< Related to the subject... Why is it that rappers seems to be associated with gangs and other types of criminal activity? Other musicians don't do stupid stuff like that, why do rappers? I mean, rappers have been killed in drive-by shootings, they carry weapons themselves (just recently, Eminem settled out of court a case where he beat up a guy with a (unloaded) pistol) etc. etc. It all seems so goddamn fake to me.
Somewhat related, there was an article in a recent Sports Illustrated regarding NBA stars and their entourages which sometime include people with a criminal record. It's all about staying true to your roots. They don't want be called sellouts by the people that the grew up with. >>
"not to mention most rap labels have a president associated with a major gang. kinda hard to avoid it. "
yeech how many times you hear of 'benefit rap concert' or 'benefit basketball game by rappers' where something goes wrong.
the rappers and their crew and those that show up to see them, some of them, just get waaay to carried away.
yeah, hey some peeps who make it big were 'questionable' before they got big, borderline shady characters, just losers that make it big and cash in from it. they needed to 'cut a record.' and once they do, then they just bathe in their wealth and flaunt it and pimp it - sooo tacky.
They know they need to get 1 cd that sells, just one, and once you get the money it's time to live large party time, do other things such as switch to the backoffice - such as open their record company and make money off the next one that wants to cut a record or get into producing or whatever. It's mind boggling how many 'indepedent' labels have sprawn up, and recording studios, in urban areas, everybody and their mother wants to be the next hot rapper.
What you don't hear from their mouths is any desire to have musical longevity and or develop and grow as people and music artists.
I do like rap, I do listen to some, not all, but I won't buy hiphop cds.
