I booked a seat for myself for this coming thursday. I also informed the woman I spoke with on the phone that I would need to take both of my cats with me. She told me they allow up to 2 cats for $80 each each way. I told her this was fine and she gave me my confirmation #.

Fast forward to today, I was looking at the USAir website and it says theres a limit of 1 pet per passenger. Alarmed, I called them up and the guy was telling me that this is true. I asked him what the hell am I supposed to do because I didn't book a flight with a different airline since they told me 2 pets would be ok. He then told me to hold on and then hung up on me :|

So I'm back on the phone with them on hold :/

Cliff Notes:

Someone posted here asking about putting a pet in his carry-on luggage to avoid the fee. I wouldn't do that.

Supervisor!

If your confirmation information shows you paid for two pets, then it's their fault, and they should be the ones paying and arranging for another airline, or just waiving the limit. Kind of an odd limit, you'd think they'd be fine with as many pets as they can fit in the plane. Not like that many people take pets with them.

80 bucks? Cheaper to buy a new one at the pound when you get to where you're going. 🙂

attach the two cats together for a mutant-kitty and tell them technically it's one pet and its not nice to discriminate

Yeah I know, that'd look bad when you send it through the xray scanner 😀

But I had no problems paying the $160 for both cats. But now they're telling me that "it's their policy and we apologize." I told her I don't need an apology, I need a solution. I gave up another ticket that I had booked for this one and now that price has gone up by about $600 :|

On hold waiting for a supervisor right now 🙂

I don't think I'd want to be on a plane full of animals. Besides, what if there are passengers with cat allergies? I was on a plane in which a passenger was freaking out because she was seated next to a dog.

Oh I was thinking of animals carried in separate sections of the plane. Old cat ladies can't bring their babies in the passenger compartment if I have any say.

One other thing: It won't help changing airlines. I think they all allow one in-cabin animal per ticketed passenger. (After all, the animal carrier needs to fit under the seat--were you going to put two cats in one carrier?) I think your only option is to have one cat fly as cargo.

I'd take a dog over a some little kid or a fat lady any day...

Please don't put them in your carry-on. As someone with cat allergies, let me tell you that it would make a flight absolutely painful (besides the seating issues) if someone were to do that.

Is that safe?

Right now the supervisor is telling me that if the passenger next to me allows me, I can put the other cat under his/her seat. She has no answer for me when I ask her what if the person says no.

My take is, I was told that it wouldn't be a problem. Now they have to do something to accommodate me since I cancelled my other reservations.

i booked a flight LAST month through the net, and they charged me $100 in fee's (i had a recent cancelled flight so i had credit) the website took it out of my bank acct right away (few hours) but US Airways JUST TODAY took it out. Way to go on the processing

One would think that pets would be one of those things not allowed in the cabin, specifically for the reasons of allergies and disruptions to the comfort of other passengers. Can't do much about allowing babies who might cry, but they damn sure could come up with something else to do with an animal. Animals would be just as bad as smoking for some people.

But I'm sure if they tried to disallow pets as carry-on, there'd be a hue and cry in the media and the planes would have slurs splashed across them in blood the next morning.

Now she's telling she can sell me another seat so I can bring them on. I think its only fair that they pay for the additional seat since it's their screw up. The supervisor is checking with her supervisor lol

And I know it sucks to bring them on as carryon but I don't know how else to bring them across the country. It's a one way flight for them. I'm open to any other suggestions that are comparable in price.

Hope it works out. If it doesn't just remember, that the cats were most likely in the final stages of planning your death.

LMAO! 😀

This is true...so true. Cats are ALWAYS planning something evil. Do you think they always have that smug, self-assured smirk on their furry faces for nothing? Hell no.

Cats are evil. Like children.

Put them in a cardboard box with some air holes poked in it. Ship it FEDEX.

Doesn't Greyhound or Amtrak provide cargo services? Would they carry an animal or would that be something requiring too much maintenance?

No matter what they say, stick to your guns no matter how far you have to escalate (if you've got the balls, which I wouldn't). They screwed up and gave you the wrong information, AND confirmed that information originally. You were under no obligation to go and follow up on it to verify that the agent was telling you the truth (though it might have been a good idea and you'll know better now).

Of course make sure the second seat is next to you. Don't want to have one cat near the back and you at the front.

There's a pressurized, temperature controlled cargo area for animals... at least on long-haul aircraft. My family and I have taken dogs on the plane as cargo when we lived overseas and came back to the US.

If the supervisor is saying you can take both cats onboard if the person next to you is okay with it, just go with it. It's likely that you'll figure out if they're going to let it go at check-in. I've seen a lot of people who were asked to show the cat at check-in. I've even seen a guy argue with the check-in agent about the weight of his cat at JFK's AA check-in counter.

Good luck!
