Sorry to get all emotional about this, but we just buried on of our pet birds and we can't figure out how he died...

We have three birds, all parrotlets (smallest parrot species, about the size of a finch). The first we've had for over 2 years with nary a problem, and the other two were adopted a few months ago from a breeder who didn't want them.

Anyway, one of the new birds was a plucker and he had very little plumage left. The other new bird is fairly large for a parrotlet and is very mean - he's a biter and screamer.

I went to feed them today and the plucker was lying on the bottom of the cage, eyes mostly closed, wings and feet shaking. I immediately picked him up and held him - he just died right there...we can't see any obvious signs of the cause of death.

again, sorry to bitch about this, but he's the first pet i've lost in about 8 or 9 years and it was very sudden - they were all chirping together an hour ago and everyone seemed fine. i get really attached to our animals (we refer to them as our kids) and losing one, even a new one that i hadn't really gotten to know or like, just sucks ass.

cliff notes:

i go to feed by birds, notice one lying on the bottom of the cage, and then held him as he died.
i'm sad.
it's even worse because we'll never know what killed him.

Ok, your title almost gave me a heart attack.

EDIT: That sucks. Birds seem to have more mental problems than other pets. Sorry about your loss. :(

I used to have a budgie. His name was Webster because he talked a lot. He was that real pretty periwinkle color and a wonderful bird. One after noon he was flying a round and had a stroke and died mid flight. I have never gotten another bird since.

I've got a pair of parrotlets. I don't know what I'd do if one of those guys died :( I feel your pain, parrotlets are great little birds.

I am sorry, but the way you described it made me LOL. :(

One of our cockatiels is sick, too.. very weak and lethargic. :( She seems to be getting better, though.. I didn't know if she was going to make it for a while.

yeah, the reason we adopted those two birds was because they were in a cage together without a single toy. i think the only reason they lasted as long as they have/did (they were banded in 98, so i'm assuming they were about six) was because they had each other.

the more we've talked about it, the more my fiancee (who is a bird keeper with the KC Zoo and has grown up around birds) thinks that it was a pre-existing condition that may have manifested due to stress, probably from the other bird.

the survivor of the pair is nicknamed dipshit, because he is feisty, mean, and a bully. he probably just was too much for poor scruffy (named for his appearance) and that was that.

thanks again for all the kind words - i hadn't gotten really attached to him yet, but this came out of left field - we expected another 15-20 years out of these birds. now i'm scared we're going to lose the first parrotlet, blue. if that happens, i will probably go apeshit for a few days...i don't even wanna think about losing him.

off to bed for me.

thanks again.

the kind of parrot I have.

I just got back from Costa Rica and these birds are flying around like pigeons do here in the states.... Cool looking birds.

that's be pretty difficult to stop, you'd have to recruit a crazy large amount of hunters to try to stop, even just slow them down.
