I just returned from my trip to Mexico and I look at my amex blue statement and for the conversion rate they charged base rate + 2%, i thought that if u charged something in another country they give you the current market conversion rate.....it turned out to be 10.88 for 1USD when the hotel was giving me 11peso for 1USD,

Travelers checks costs extra fee's to purchase. Atleast from Amex.

Best bet is exchanging it at a bank that gives the best rates for your buck 🙂

I get my Traverlers Checks for free from my bank...as every bank I've ever used has done.

My Amex doesnt do that! I have the business gold card. we buy stuff in the UK all the time with it... never had a fee for it.

I used my Amex Blue (for students at the time) and my Visa card all over Europe in the Fall of 02 and was charged the exact exchange at that time, no fees.

Just got a letter in the mail that says my Citi rewards card will start charging 3% beginning in April 🙁

So consider yourself lucky 😉

Travellers checks don't cost money. And if you've ever paid money for them, consider yourself a failure at life. I got $200 in travellers checks at AAA and didn't have to pay anything extra.
