Fuzzy sound

HELP!!!

My software sound has gone strangly fuzzy. Any software sound, be it mp3, wav or any sounds from software, comes out of my sound card with a great amount of distortion and noise. However, music that plays through the sound card, which is integrated on my motherboard, through a line-in audio device (i.e. my Sony Discman) plays clearly with no problem.

Any idea what's the problem and how I can fix it? It's not hardware or at least not entirely so b/c it plays fine from Line-In.

I encountered this with a PCI CMI8738 Card (CMI8738 or similar is a chip found on many integrated soundcards too) and I reinstalled the drivers and it worked fine, so might be worth downloading the latest drivers for the onboard soundcard.

I finally put it down to the installation of 'Yahama XG Soft Engine' that acts like some kind of software soundcard, came with Final Fantasy VIII
