I'm trying to get rid of a matching couch and loveseat as I'm moving. They're in pretty good condition and I have them up on the free section of craigslist. I've been trying to get rid of them for about 5 days now and am getting really frustrated with all the no-shows.

I don't care if you don't want the couches. I don't care if you change your mind. LET ME KNOW. I have 5 people waiting in line ready to pick them up. If you say you are on your way, I'm holding it for you for a few hours as a courtesy.

The number of people who say they are on their way and then don't show up is really pissing me off. The below conversation has been repeated several times over the past few days. Sometimes I think people are just dicking me around for fun.

Al
Hi :)
When can I pick the couch set up?
thank you

Hi Al,

Can you come this evening? Any time after 3 pm today works great.

...

Al
sure , how about 3:30 ?
Whats the addy?

3:30 works great.

<address>. It's ground floor so it'll be easy to move them out. Call when you get close. I'll try to park my car right out front on the street and will move when you call so you can take the spot right out front.

<phone number>

Al
Great :) see you then

Hi Al,

Are you getting close?

Never heard from him again, via email or phone.

charge $20 for it, they will show.

This. If they are in decent shape, people will get them. The problem is that the type of people who would actually take a lot of what is in the "free" section are not the most reliable.

Most normal people expect the "Free" section to have stuff like "Matching couch (red) and love seat (black with white polka dots) set!!! Free!!!" And the pictures (if there are any) look like something is living inside them ready to eat you if you sit down.

This is what works in SoCal.
If you put a couch on the sidewalk that has a sign that says "free", it won't budge.
Exact same scenario with the exception of the sign saying "$20"...couch gone in minutes.

I have several pictures and they actually match and look pretty damn decent. I'd keep them if it wasn't gonna cost me a few hundred bucks to move them across country.

Somebody has obviously hacked Numenorean's account, but I think we're all better off for it.

LOL. I actually just had the same stunt pulled on me. I'm selling a sofa-bed on CL as well... and...

Person (11:00): So, my gf is REALLY interested in your couch, give us first dibs.
Me: Sure thing.
Person: We're going 50 miles north to get some stuff, but on the way back we'll pick up your couch. We'll come at 5:00

Me (5:00): So it's 5:00, are you coming?
Person: Yeah. We're still 50 miles north from where you live...

Me (6:00): you coming?
Person: Not sure.

and he never came... I think he blocked my # too.

Just tell them all first come, first served.

I have never had any issues getting rid of free stuff. In fact, last guy who came to pickup a free air hockey table I convinced to take my foosball table even though he wasn't all that interested in it.

Well one lady finally came after half canceling, and coming late. They went last night thankfully.

I gave away a bicycle helmet too. 30+ emails from people later, one guy gave a definite time and phone number and never showed up. Went down the list until one guy said "I'll be there in 15 minutes". He was there in under 10. :)

Anyways, it's all gone now, and I'm officially homeless.

I just sold a weight set that was just sitting in my garage for years... (couldn't take the time to lift anything while watching my pron). The guy who bought it was all aggressive about buying it because he had worked out a couple of deals prior and by the time he got to the addy, someone else had bought it. I also sold a Filing cabinet and a minifridge. All came and got them like they said they would. Easy transactions.

Was a furniture bonfire not an option?

On a serious note, yes people are generally jerks who have no care or rspect for other folks time.

.

that's my strategy. I promise nothing. I email everyone who responds my ad and say "first one who gets here with cash in hand (0 in your case) gets it"

I was moving out, don't have a truck, and didn't want to pay $250 for the junkers to come take it away. After spending several days arranging times with people while having tons of other things to do, yeah, I got frustrated after the 3rd person in a row flaked out on me. I had to have it gone by 1 pm today or else I'd be out $250.

I'm in the middle of a city. Can't just light it up.

I find this on CL all the time trying to sell stuff. The majority of people simply will not show or will not call back, I have no idea why other than that they are idiots.

Not only that, but it seems people actively troll the free stuff categories, setting up pick up times with no intention of ever showing up. One lady responded to two separate ads of mine. I didn't respond to her on the second ad after she dicked me around on the first one.

I've just decided people on CL are flakey in general. I have yet to have a successful transaction of any kind on there. I've tried to buy and I've tried to sell, and same thing happens, if they even bother to respond to the initial contact, they make arrangements then drop off the face of the planet.

Pretty much decided there are too many people on there just there to entertain themselves.

I'd put the furniture out and leave a cl post with no contact info (no email, phone #). The level of urgency jumps by quite a lot for people attempting to pick it up. At the previous apartment, a neighbor left a vacuum in front of my door. I didn't bother to check or throw it away. Put a cl listing with address and it was gone w/in 30mins.
