longhorn is what it is code nammed, I dont have any screen shots though. I heard that one of the early betas got leaked and that it was still "very beta" so even if you have screen shots I dont know how accurate they are yet.

anyone have any more (or more accurate) information please feel free to add/correct me.

The release that is floating around is Longhorn Alpha...............it's not even a Beta yet.

A friend tried it and had to take it off after two days..................it's not far along enough yet. The hardware suppliers' WinXP drivers will not work with it.

Looked promising though.

Built-In DVD Burning! Hope it is better than the Built-IN CD Burning in XP!
oh come on now, I wouldnt say the built-in CD burning in XP is all that bad. It's good for the casual user however if you want something with more capabilities you are going to want Nero/Roxio/etc.

Ok, I agree. It is convenient and simple. I just wish that it was a little easier to burn MP3's to CD. The WMP method just isn't for me.

Well, if you consider Palladium (TCPA) promising, then I guess it is.

However, the 3D effects in the GUI (which I doubt work yet given the early alpha stage of the video card drivers, so OpenGL and DirectX might not be working) sound cool, maybe kind of like Mac OS X.2.

Heh, ya linux is much superior than what that TCPA is.

Why the hell would anybody buy a PC that is not there's? and buy dvds that they cannot use? Buy software they can't modify or play with?

I am not some entertainment industry's #$%@ (<== insert term for female dog) and my computer ain't ever going to a marketing tool directed towards my pocket. It's like selling billboard space in my living room, except that I have to pay for it.

I ain't ever going to buy a DVD with such protection on it, and I ain't going to pay for none of that crap. And to make TCPA a required part of consumer electronics is offront to my sensibilities of freedom and justice.

I don't steal movies, I don't sell copies of cd's, I don't steal games or download illigal MP3's. The only music that I do download is free from MP3.com were I can listen to which artists I possibly buy records from.

I am not a consumer. I think disney is evil and Microsoft can go back to whatever hole that they came from.

I buy a car, I modify it. I buy used and try to make it new. I beleive that spending over 7000 dollars on a car is a waste of money. When I buy a computer I do the same thing. Spending over 2000 dollars on a computer is a waste of money. How do you think "fritz" would react if I put a non-standard cdrom in the computer or overclocked the cpu? How bout making backup's of my music or making new mix tapes or CDs. Is this OK? do I have spend a extra 3000 dollars for professional-grade stuff that will make it past FRITZ's defense or can I do that with my "consumer" grade stuff? You want me to bend-over? OK whatever, Ohh look a 3d enhanced desktop!!! Can't see it from down here to well!

You know I am sure that TCPA is will stop all illigal activities. I mean the software pirates in china will be stopped cold in their tracks. Remember folks this is just for our protection!

I am sure that real criminals will not ever figure out how to make chips that will solder into place instead of FRITZ chips. Hey if intel works this right they may be able to make it illigal to use ATHLON proccessor, we may have to all buy new computers, you don't want to be able to allow johny with his 1ghz machine to steal software and sell it to those of us with our new shiny 5 ghz fritz machine with our new OS? Hell even Linux is illigal in the US now, because people have been illegally allowing those out side to US to use crypto to foriegn countries! And why would you want it anyways, its just to damn hard for you moronic americans to use anyways, too much work, rather spend money let someone else fix it for you!!

Hell we thought it was cool to make you buy new 1.6 ghz machines with 256 ram just to run XP without it crashing all the time!!! HAHA. Now we can tell you what machines you can buy and how long you can use them! Without buying new computers you will not to be able to play the latest brightny speers cd or play StarWARS jedi-screw prequal 8!!! Make all current electronics illigal by fedral law!!! MONEY MONEY MONEY!!! HAHA

Want the new OS? buy a new computer or it will be against the law to run it! you thought calling in over the internet for permission to reformat your harddrive was bad. How about having to mail you computer back to the manufacturer just to reistall your OS or swap out the motherboard or risk paying fines or going to jail! WE won't let you. You might hurt your computer, they are to complicated for you. Don't worry we will keep track of you website usage, don't want to use up more than your fair share of bandwidth do you? BTW we have to install new software in your LAN's router. It's for your protection. We don't want you to be using our hardware to allow more than one or two computers on the internet against your ISP's accepible use agreement do you?, file sharing is illigal now too anyways so you can only download from certified websites like AOL or disney, uncertified websites may have violence or sex or pirated images you know. It's only for your protection, consumers pay for crimes against mother corporation!

Omg do not get me started on that crappy feature, I hate the fact that it tries to tell you when you need to write something to cd.

P.S now is that the version that has been floating around the newsgroups? looks kinda like Xp from the screenies, hope they do some more big changes to the way it looks. What I would like to see is that they put the program menu in the mouse properties, to be able to attach it similar to linux themes!

yea sounds good buddy except this part "And why would you want it anyways, its just to damn hard for you moronic americans to use anyways, too much work, rather spend money let someone else fix it for you!!"

Its not that people are dumb or moronic its just that many people have other jobs and hobbies besides computers, that take up lots of thier time and leave not much time to learn a whole new way of computers, I have used linux and have found it to be a pretty simple OS, the thing about linux is that is built more for a person that works with computers all day (plus it is hyped to be complicated). I have nothing against linux, but I do feel that it is not for the average joe to just use in general, their systems would be half as secure as they are now with windows on them, not saying that windows is really secure or that linux is not its just more complicated for people to update and keep up with the changes. But now this is just my opinion.

Ya I was just being sarcastic, that seems like the attitude of a lot of software and hardware vendors, If you give people a chance by properly providing documentation 90% of the time they will figure it out for themselves, they only seek out help from expensive tech phone lines when they are at a loss. (well most of the time... , laziness is still out there)

Remember when you bought a copy of old dos 5.0 or something like that the user manual!! It came in a gigantic three-ring binder with removable pages and such. It discribed most every aspect of your OS, so you could figure it out for yourself when something went wrong, or you wanted to try out a new feature, hell you could still have fun with it if thats what you wanted. I remember being a little kid flipping thru that gigantic book to figure out how to get more extended memory for my dad's old 286 so I could play my x-wing game. People complained of the obtuse book, but it was better than nothing and was actually usefull.

Now what is the OS documentation since win98? Stick the cd in the tray and reboot the computer and select "restore computer" option if you are lucky. If you wanted to learn about your OS you could go down to the book store and spend 70 bucks on a book that will show you how to custimize your screen saver and hot buttons or a thick text book that would exlain to you about 486's, pentium pros, edo ram, and howto repair laserjet printers in a effort to produce more A+ certified drones. Microsoft's idea of making it user freindly is for the computer to tell you what you want to do, and hiding anything the least bit usefull.

What about features like regedit or fdisk /mbr? Very usefull stuff for surviving in a windows enviroment, but you can screw your computer up. There are probably dozens of useful stuff that they hide from the average user, just because they think you'll to stupid and will fry your computer if you knew about them.

Stuff like this breeds the attitude that my computer scares me and god-dangit I spent the 200 bucks now fix it for me! I know people have lifes and jobs and such, but that won't stop them from enjoying working on computers if thats what they want and if anybody ever needed help I am glad and never look down at them because they have a hard time figuring out what the right mouse button is used for, I know that in other aspects of life they would probably have lessons to teach me.

As someone said in another thread, "damn, this drag guy talks alot" ;)

I remember back in 2000 (yes, 2000!) I got an old 386 off of someone, it was my first computer, I read the entire dos manual, got to know how to navigate around via the command line (which I already knew for the most part actually), learned how to make batch scripts, all kinds of fun stuff :) Then I moved onto windows (win2k, new computer) spring 2001, and I found myself constantly wanting to change things, but windows just doesn't really want to be changed. It doesn't allow you to think out of the box, because everything literally is a box (that sentence blatantly stolen from elsewhere :p). I just don't like how windows wants to anticipate everything for you, I like to control things myself, be creative, and have something I can call "mine". Fall 2002 I started with linux, next winter I went 100% debian, then last december I went to NetBSD, and now I'm 100% NetBSD. :) As logical and scientific computers are, I think the goal should be that the computer let you be creative :)

I think computers are like breast implants for the brain. (just without the whole slutty surgical porno thing... unless thats what you are into)People can seem very smart if they spend time researching on the internet and use computers to "augment" their thinking ability before talking. (think silicon valley, califorians are so creative with silicon!) So infact they are using the computer and the internet as part of there brain making them artificially smarter and there is nothing wrong with that.

And I want my forehead "implant" to be as "maliable" and "flexible" as possible, and I definatly don't want disney, bill gate, or hollywood telling me what I can or can't do with it! (thats disgusting) :p

I truly beleave that people are as smart as they want to be, drive and ability go hand and hand.
