future video card

im saving for a video card and will probably be able to get it in june
for the moment i was looking at the ati x800xl but it only has sm2
and the nvidias have sm3
does anyone have any suggestions about the prices of video card in june for about 300

Don't worry too much about SM2 vs. SM3...just look at benchmarks and see which card performs best in the games you play (at the price point you want). Right now the X800XL is indeed the best deal for $300. In June...no one can really say yet. ATI's R520 is "supposed" to be at least launched by then (paper launch probably), which may drive down the prices of current cards - but I kind of doubt it, especially if availability is not there by that point.

You can't really tell right now. New cards should be released by then, and while they probalby wont' be available they might drive down the price of current cards.

I agree with SynthDude2001 though, don't bother worrying about SM2 or SM3, just get whichever performs best in the games you play.

I don't believe anything new will be out by June. For that price I would look at getting a 6800GT.

LOL. I don't settle for leftovers, but then again I don't upgrade often either. I plan on keeping my 9800p until I can't play newest games decently or until it breaks/melts/blows up, whichever comes first.

I'd have gotten the $309 leadtek one (I need an AGP one) but it doesn't look like it has component out for that price. There might be an adapter but it kind of ruins the deal for me.

If I can get somebody to buy my old system I'll get one though. Ironically I'd rather get an X800XL, but the fact that the AGP version is so close to and AGP 6800gt price makes me think the 6800gt is the better option. Sorry ATI 🙁

Yeah, mine is actually an AGP too. There don't seem to be many 6800GT's at all with component output - actually, it seems that there are more 6600-series cards with it, strangely enough. Although if component output is really that important to you, and you want a high-end video card, then the X800XL might be your best choice after all. 😛 ATI actually has a DVI->Component adapter for their Radeon cards (9500 and up), and it only costs $30 or so. I should know, I used to have one for my 9700 Pro. 😛

Wow, you're right about the crappy component support on the 6800gts... I don't know why I thought the $350 range ones came with adapters.

Looks like I'm going to be going with an X800XL eventually now.
