I just bought my system about 3 months ago. as high quality as I could afford and it was in the high end of the high-end range at the time.. pulling 100+ FPS from the current games. But now I'm worried, because looking into the new games running on the Unreal Tournament 3 engine and the new Quake 4 engines, I'm not going to be getting my triple digits anymore! In fact, I'm worried that I'll have to upgrade AGAIN in the near future (within a year) just to play "the Project" from ATI coming out that benchmarked only at 31FPS! I can play doom3 at 1280x1024, 4x AA, etc. with no performance lag, but these new games, eugh, enough to but you in the poor house.

you should be fine, most games within the next year+ soyuldn't take an x800xl out of business. most games won't be programmed good enough so that they will use all of the graphics power. just as the x800s came out, they made the 9800s go old. nto the r520 will make the x800s old. the technology is advancing so fast you can't keep up with it. REmeber this: no matter how high end you are, you are never going to be the best. games will always be better than your hardware. in a month your pc is outdated in almost every category. live on. if u need to upgrade, so does every one else too :), then no one does, and the econmy slows everythign down. no worries.

im done ranting now.

You will reduce the eye candy, and resolution you play at. This will keep your rig in bussiness for two years, or maybe more
