Yesterday, I have bought a Compaq R3230CA machine from Future Shop. The salesperson offered me a $50 cheaper open box machine ($1550 instead of $1600). When I asked about possibility of dead pixel appearance, that guy told me that technicians test returned machines to conform to quality standards of new ones, and that everything will be fine. I did not test the machine in store. When I turned it on at home, I got a normal Windows desktop with a little difference: the background was set to white instead of standard Compaquish red-orange squares wallpaper. As I switched it to black, I uncovered 3 dead always-on pixels (kind of orange-red, visible on red and blue background, green is too bright to see them) in top left corner, placed next to each other horizontally. According to Compaq policies, this kind of defect means warranty replacement (2 always on dots within an inch from each other).
So, here's what we got:
Company salesperson lied about checking for dead pixels.
Company technician have changed wallpaper to conceal a product defect.
Company technician have violated manufacturer's QA/warranty replacement policies.
Sounds like a nice friendly neighbourhood store, doesn't it? You'll have a hard time persuading me to spend a cent in your store, folks.
