Future proof memory?

I know there really isn't such a thing as future proof memory, but what memory would you recommend? What memory speed will Intel (and AMD) go with after PC3200 (400MHz)?

Intel is going to DDR2, sooner then most want though. AMD has the controller on teh chip so I have not heard anything faster then PC3200, but you can always get faster to overclock.

Not necessarily on the PC4400. All of it has high latencies. Tight latency PC3200/PC3500 is a better bet for universal application. PC4400 is fine for Intel systems, but absolute crap for AMD systems.

Search memory section in Anandtech website and read a few articles there. They are pretty helpful.

Even with the intel systems, running your memory with low latency chips and running an out of snyc FSB (high CPU FSB while keeping the ram lower) produces performance just as good (possibly better) than insanely high 1:1 PC4400 setups.

No such thing as "future" proof but you're probably best off going with mature/high quality PC3200/3500 as was already suggested.

If you play games, that's not true.. 500+ mhz will beat any 400mhz solutions in 1:1 setup guarenteed. I have both OCZ 3200 EL and 4000 GOLD and the 4000 GOLD is by far the faster ram.

As I explained in a different topic already, there is no universal truth to this. Taking the processor type as a given, some applications are latency bound, some are bandwidth hungry.
