Does not matter what field you are in... just be in a managerial position. All the lower level desk job will be outsourced, I have seen Finance and research and much more go to India. US needs managers to manage ppl working in india so just choose a profession where you can become a manager ASAP or choose a startup

rock star. Or professional video game player.

Seriously though I work in entertainment and I think its pretty future proof. The weak dollar brings foreign investment and a strong healthy economy brings internal investors. You have to communicate with directors, producers and writers all in English (with exception) and most things are hands-on with them in the room. I don't think they would fly all the way to a 3rd world nation to get it done even if it was cheap. There are lot of jobs surrounding this industry including some IT and software. Lots of "trade" style jobs as well that are high paying lighting techs, cameramen, sound recorders. You won't make millions doing these jobs but they are pretty safe bets with high pay and good benefits. Only problem is its a local thing. You have to move to LA, London, NYC, Vancouver or some other place vested in the industry. Now there is filming going on a some states around the country but I would come out here and cut your teeth.

Health care? Wages are going to go down. A lot.

Just think about for a minute.

Everyone bitches about how health care costs too much in this country. At the same time they want to expand it to include everyone. So we're going to increase the demand and decrease the price. Do you really think only the health insurance industry will be affected? Salaries are going to have to be slashed across the board in health care.

Dont go into Programming in IT; I would suggest some kind of Hands-on Networkin or Database Systems. Everywhere you turn around there are more H1b visas being approved for IT Work.

You can probably make more money as a nurse.

We'll see about that. This assumes that some drastic change is actually going to happen. And even if it does, it doesn't guarantee that wages will be slashed. They might be restructured. But with the problems we already have with fulfilling many health care positions, slashing the salaries across the board would be asinine.

Look into health care tourism. even health care isn't immune to globalization.

How?

There's a shortage of nurses, and will continue to be one for the foreseeable future.

Physicians, outside of specialists will see the greatest cuts if they happen at all, more likely their wages won't grow as fast as the rest of the economy. And Medicare reimbursement has already cut into their profit margins. It's nearly impossible to make money as a GP & have a stand alone office, many physicians are becoming hospital employees so they don't have to deal with the headache of keeping an office running.

Prisons, hospitals (health care), and nursing homes (health and elderly care). As there will always be people going to jail, getting sick or hurt, and getting old.

IT will still be around, as mentioned before with data centers, and network administration, as there has to be people onsite to deal with problems. Same with software designers, and highly specialized fields in engineering, especially those that require a security clearance.

I don't know about that, I work for one of the big phone companies in the noc, and i don't think the government would allow them to move that out of the country. not secure enough. plus there will be a need for a warm body in the central offices to maintain the equipment.

I don't think you can-or should-plan a lifetime career anymore. Go for a ten year horizon and constantly reevaluate your possibilities.

Good point. The list of "future proof" careers probably changes every several years anyway. The changes may not be drastic, but don't assume that any position will be around forever in its current form.

Do you really think an IT person in the government is Future Proof?

Look up outsourcing and A76. I suppose other jobs and branches will see this as a way to save money or hide money and this is probably the tip of the ice burg.

Shit Happens.

Are you referring to my earlier comment that a government job in technology should be immune to outsourcing?

I just can't imagine that someone working in the defense industry, especially in a position that requires a security clearance, would have their job outsourced. I don't think someone outside the US can even get a TS clearance.
