Future Processor Support?

Hey,
I've seen recent news articles about upcoming 6xx intel chips with 2mb of L2 cache. I've got a GIGABYTE GA-8GPNXP DUO and am curious if my motherboard could support this chip in the future?

Thanks
Bill

if the 6 series are the dual cores, then i heard you'll need new mobos. otherwise, i think you'd be fine with what you've got minus maybe a bios update.

At this point there's no way to be 100% sure(I have not heard Gigabyte or Intel confirm that this will work), but it's a "probably." The 6xx series are just Prescotts with 2MB of L2 cache(to void what Dijital said, they're not dual core), so there's nothing different about them on an architectural level. The thing is that Intel is going to release them with their next round of chipsets, so they really could be doing anything, especially if they want to avoid a repeat of the Socket-775/9xx-chipset disaster. My best guess is that the chip will work, on the condition that a BIOS update will be required to properly recognize and deal with the new cache size.
