OFF is a highly connected peer-to-peer distributed file system. The unique feature of this system is that it stores all of its internal data in a multi-use randomized block format. In other words there is not a one to one mapping between a stored block and its use in a retrieved file. Each stored block is simultaneously used as a part of many different files. Individually, however, each block is nothing but arbitrary digital white noise.

No creative works, copyrighted or not, are ever communicated between OFF peers. Only meaningless blocks of random data. No tangible copies of creative works are ever stored on OFF peers.

We call the OFF System a ?Brightnet?. No secrecy is needed as nothing shady is going on.

Sounds like torrents to me, especaily with blocks of information being shared together. There's not a lot of users on the network right now, but I was hoping some sort of ATOT effect would kick in.

Wasn't eXeem supposed to be the future of torrents when Suprnova went down?

This OFF concept sounds nice, but I have a feeling this won't get off the ground.

So wait, you are simply getting pieces of non-sensical data that means nothing until completely assembled on your computer? Is that basically whats going on, as to avoid any sort of copywrite laws?

Yeah I tried it too, but got rid of it when all the kazaa-esque stuff started showing up. And that was like, after a week.

DC still works great for me.
Less assholes, more files.
I dont think I could possibly get my hands on enough Linux ISO's.

Apparently you're uploading "blocks of data" and not "files", and multiple people must host different parts of the file...

So you're downloading parts of the file from different people, like torrents. There's no tracker then, it's just nodes.

"With off, the big blocks eating the bandwidth are categorically NOT parts of the inserted file. the file is stored not in the blocks themselves, but in their context with one another"

Just because you only have part of a file doesn't make it legal. That's like saying copying half of someone's code is ok.

Not that I care at all, but if you think you're safe with this, I laugh.

From what I remember about it, it's not copying half of someone's code exactly. One block can be parts of multiple files. The transfer of any particular block can't be linked to any specific file.
