Future of AMD

My AMD shares are finally back in black (for me)--Am wondering whether to give up on the company.

Do you have an AMD or Intel PC?

I'm running 4 AMD (XP2000+, 750@1GHz Athlon, 300K6-2, 233K6) and 1 Intel (P90@100) at home, and an Intel (5000P3) at work. It's not that I don't like Intel, I just like AMD's bang/buck ratio better.

If they don't improve their AMD 64 yields: gone. Next year will be another big year for Intel: .09mu, Prescott, PCI Express, etc. You can bet their marketing guys will be out in force. AMD needs to improve yields, stay competitive in performance and price, but not slash prices so low that they no longer produce a profit. They also could use a real marketing campaign. Otherwise, they'll still be down, or worse, out of the game.

back in black? hehe.. I got in on AMD's stock a while back while it was stuck at $8 ad sinking... i'm glad it's where its at now.

I've been contemplating whether or not I should keep it too though...

I'm an AMD man, always have been with my PCs.
As far as it's future goes, who knows? They need to work on their yields and get more uptodate in their manufacturing processes. I expect that they will be stuck in the position that they are in for the next few years.

"AMD will gain on Intel soon" - Are you asking about market share or profitability?
I'm pretty sure Intel will always stay ahead of AMD as far as market share goes. I would guess Intel will always be a more profitable company than AMD.
Unless they really do something stupid

"Intel rules! AMD is doomed" - As stated above, I think Intel will always rule over AMD. But I think there is a future for AMD. I wouldn't sell AMD shares for a loss.
Be patient... it's all about perception

Hit it right on the nose Blain. Just keep it right now and see what happens.

Depends on what kind of an investor you are, I'd sell it for the short term. Its begging to come down, and the stock is overpriced.

Asking for advice on specific stocks on a forum like this one is akin to putting your penis into a meatgrinder. It's not a good idea.

i wouldn't place your money on AMD's cpu market. they will always remain behind as long as Dell, the biggest OEM computer manufacturer, refuses to use their products. HP and IBM are planning on using the Opteron though, so that may mean even bigger money, as the corporate clice of the pie trumps home users. AMD will always hold a place among enthusiasts, because of their cheap prices, and because it's the underdog. as for me, 100% of my boxes are AMD, I have a 2400+, 1.4Ghz tbird, 1Ghz tbird, and a 1.3ghz duron 🙂

Ouch--thanks for the visual.

I thought this forum would be slightly appropriate because of the nature of the company. Perhaps I should cross post in the CPU forum and see what the fanboys of each company say! 😛

Crap--AMD is already DOWN today!

AMD marketing is much better I never got anything free from Intel

Since I won a XP CPU when they did there first road trip tours back in 01'
AMD has been my cpu of choice since then.

No free Intel shirts ,Hats or CPU for me.

So Intel not inside.

AMD All the Way Ohh I have been a share holder since 99'

slapping on Arctic Silver != giving advice on how to spend your money.

Thanks to AMD CPU prices aren't as high as they would be. Not to say AMD is all about warm and fuzzy feelings and keeping prices down for the masses since we all know that it's competition forces them to keep their chips cheaper than Intel's. Regardless, they do have a better offering for the budget minded and I put nothing but AMD in my personal builds, work systems and customer builds. It doesn't hurt that they have some processors like the 1700+ and Barton 2500+ that are extremely receptive to OC'ing either.
I hope AMD has the financial footing to stay in the running a long time so it's not just an Intel world.

im rooting for AMD. lets hope they can stay in the business and my next computer won't have a choice in what CPU i get.

If you want a stable stock, something you can throw your money into and forget about it ... then go with Intel. They're stock price has steadily been climbing.
If you're more into trying to get a bigger gain then go with AMD. Either way you should hold on to what you have right now. If you have some money right now, I would personally put it in Intel, they're roadmap really good the next couple of qtrs. and there's rumors that they "solved" an age old issue with SiO2. Supposely found a new material that leaks less.

my 2cents.

the company i work at buys from 10,000 to 15,000 PC's every year. this year we bought AMD instead of Intel

the main reason was price and the UDA that the HP/nVidia/AMD solution offers

HP has an Athlon CPU PC, the D325

we bought a crap load, they work fine in our enterprise

Hilarious. Intel's "Inside" marketing is considered one the best branding acheivements of all time. Virtually everyone knows who Intel is and recognizes the dum-da-da-da-dum theme. OTOH, almost no one outside a geek BBS knows who AMD is. I have to tell people that they're "the other Intel" like "Dr. Pepper is to Coke".

My opinion is that AMD will continue to struggle. The Athlon64 has a significant problem in that (unlike the AthlonXP) die sizes are huge and yields are low. So production costs are up but ASP's will NOT rise in the near-term. This means more losses.
My prediction remains that someday AMD will be bought by IBM.

i don't think IBM would very much an interest in keeping the microprocessor business alive. i'd think they'd want AMD for the server side technology, desktop be damned.
