I plan to build one of these under $1350.00 which these ALL are-with a 19" monitor.
These are all well within each other's price range, so what would perform best AND LAST LONGEST w/o an upgrade--other than a new graphics card heh,heh every "now and then" :)
P4 1.7 with RDRAM--GF3 Ti200
P4 1.9 with DDR--Radeon 8500
AthlonXP 2000--GF3 Original Model
Thanks,
and dont flame!! (much)

Athlon. But get a 1900XP instead of 2000. 60-some MHz increase and a lot more $$. Not worth it especially if you plan on overclocking. Then get a GF3 Ti200 instead of GF3 vanilla. Gainward preferably -- overclock it to Ti500 levels.

1st choice- Athlon XP 2000; but if you are going to be chipping the core, turning on the power button without the HSF and pour water all over it go with a P4 rig.

2nd choice- P4 1.9 GHz w/DDR

The best cpu is the xp 2000+...it will get you close to current 2.2ghz northwoods

The best vid card IMO is the radeon 8500...so maybe couple that with the athlon 2000...

I agree with the above the 1900+ or the 1800+ or both better bang for the buck buys and would still beat a p4 1.9ghz in most things...not northwood cause I haven't seen them yet but I imagine they would only be a 10 percen improvement on the regualr willamette 1.9ghz and therefore most likely the athlon 1900+ would still be better...

Slight edge to intel on lasting longer, eventhoug I have had amds since 1998 and they all still run today....

the athlon and p4 1.9 are both likely to not be a bottle neck for the cpu for a bit...
