Currently, I'm running a T-Bird 900. Are there enough good games that are coming out that will justify upgrading my machine this summer, or can I want another year or 2?

Depends what your other hardware is, but i'd say that you'll need a faster CPU to run Doom3 at the very least...

Other hardware includes:
Video: Radeon 8500LE 128MB
RAM: 384MB PC133
I think my mobo is a MSI K7T Pro2A, I can't remember off the top of my head.

If Doom 3 is the only game that I can't run on my hardware setup, then I won't bother upgrading. There's no way that I'm going to dump lots of money into upgrading my system for one game right now. Especially since the only other major use of my computer is MS Word.

See the fastest duron your mobo supports. They are hella cheap. Throw that one in if you want.

Huh, I wish it was as simple as that for me. The ECS K7VMA only supports durons up to 850mhz :\

Moral of the Story: Research the board before you buy it.

The max that my mobo can support is a Duron 1g, and T-Bird 1.4G. T-Birds are getting harder to find though....

Oh well, I'll be getting myself a T-bird soon (finally)............ After all, we'll never need more than a gigahertz ;)

I had a Pro2a, but the capacitor blew out in the 11th month of the 12 month warranty. They replaced my board free of charge w/ Turbo2. So now I can go all the way up on 266 =P
I still have my old 650 Duron in there, (and other stuff close to yours in my sig). I plan on jumping up to 2200 sometime soon real cheap.

You may want to get a new board - search MSI in hot deals and check out the board that newegg is selling in one of those threads =)

DOOM3 certainly isn't the only game coming out in the next year that won't run well on that system. It depends on what you play, but LAST year's games were coming out that didn't play well on that. Even Q3-based games like Soldier of Fortune 2, Jedi Knight II, etc. Unreal Tournament 2003. I guess it depends on what you play, but I'd venture to say even NWN and WC3 don't run that well on that. I upgraded from an equivalent system last summer.

If you had to ask, though, it probably doesn't matter to you so maybe get a faster CPU and other than that stick with what you have.

Actually, I did play JK2 and NWN on my system, and while the performance wasn't exactly mind-blowing, the games were playable. I wasn't able to turn on all the bells and whistles, and there were some occasional slowdowns, but it wasn't to the point where the game was unplayable. All I want to know is if there are going to be a lot of games, which are totally unplayable on my system that are worth playing. If Doom 3 is the only game that's coming out soon that's totally unplayable on my system, then it's not worth upgrading. I'd rather wait another year or two.
