The holodeck would be awsome :D but in a reallistic (within 50 years time) futuristic computer I think that Carbon-nano tubes will be completly uses and speeds will be the the point where software is far lacking in able to challange the hardware hence the major focus would be on computer software and not hardware (while I do believe that new inovations will com out, I dont think that it will be as big a deal as it is now) I think largest part of your computer will be the monitor, mouse, and keyboard (assuming that they still exist) Speakers can easily become smaller, and it may even be possible to inturpet brain waves into actions, but I dont believe many people would be to thrilled at the thought of changing, well, thought so that the monitor screen can be displayed in your head. If they do do that though, I think that the electricity needed to run it (all save the monitor, maybe) will probibly generated from body heat (possibly in your chair. Security would be much higher as (if brain waves are monitored) your specific brain wave is vary unique, :) NO MORE PASSWORDS!!.

Sorry if I'm ressurecting a dead thread but...

You really think hardware will ever be to the point where software cannot challenge it? Isn't a major point of distributed computing the fact that one computer (even a giant, NSA computer) can't handle the computations in a timely fashion?

Software will continue to challenge hardware until someone proves whether or not P=NP. And if they're not equal, I doubt hardware will ever keep up (unless quantum computing comes through in a big way). :)
