Future $ 1,200 ~ gaming rig. Finished !!

Hey guys ! A returning ATOT guy..apparently lost his memory for his username//password lols 🙁 (member since 2007...but back 3 years after!)

But anyways, It's been 3 years seeing everything I MEAN everything in terms of CPU/GPU power going through the roof !. And I would like to make a decent system that will keep me happy for the next 2-3 years without breaking the bank.

I'll be planning to re-use my keyboard // mouse , 19" widescreen monitor, speakers and probably a cooler master from my old fubar build. But here are the answers from the sticky post to get you guys going. Right now i'm using a gateway...yeah a gateway phenom 1.8 Ghz, 4 Gig Ram, 4650 XFX 1 gig that I bought a year ago (when my dell previously gone fubar)

I'm kinda hesitant to build a new comp again (2nd time... lol ). I need to brush up on that again.

:awe: inc !

1. What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.

- Gaming (nothing too extreme, would like to have a constant 30FPS min with eyecandy), PS CS3 while rendering some artwork, surfing etc.

2. What YOUR budget is. A price range is acceptable as long as it's not more than a 20% spread.

1,200 ~ at least including taxes (California). But I can stretch to 1,500 (if there's a sweet monitor that can make the setup worthwhile.

*I could use the left over $$$ :awe:

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from.

U.S of A

4. IF YOU have a brand preference. That means, are you an Intel-Fanboy, AMD-Fanboy, ATI-Fanboy, nVidia-Fanboy, Seagate-Fanboy, WD-Fanboy, etc.

Best bang for my buck.

removed question 5 lols

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.

yes

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.

Just Default

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with.

for now 1440x900, but I'm still shopping for a decent budget screen for 1080.

9. WHEN do you plan to build it?

2-3 months

But this is my list so far (i've been catching up for a week now ..in terms of tech lols !)

Let me know what ya think guys. Here are my questions.

- Is there need of improvement? DOES crossfire make a difference ( I like to try out crossfire though lol)
- Do I need a better heatsink for the CPU ?
- Could I use more ram going to 8 gigs?

Depending on the games you want to play you may want even more powerful video cards. Crysis, Metro 2033, Stalker CoP, and some of the other latest games with highest settings, high AA, and 1080+ will be a little of a struggle, especially on the minimum FPS in a CF setup. I take some issue with how benchmarks make what I consider nice hardware look inadequate at running their mean tests, but I also understand most no AA or 1680x1050 benches produce irrelevant results.

You don't need a better heatsink if you don't overclock at all. Kind of a shame that anybody who custom builds doesn't take advantage of that, since that is one of the very best reasons to do it imo.

I think more than 4 gb of ram is unnecessary even for editing large RAW pictures in CS3, even with a good number of layers and filters. I could be wrong, and I'm sure a lot of it depends on how detailed you are with your work/hobby.

Compatibility wise everything looks fine. Enjoy your second build.

Thanks for the reply. I'm used to playing 1440x900 settings with 2AA or non at all on my prebuilt gateway w/ 4650 HD on older titles (when they got dirt cheap at black friday) such as bioshock / stalker vanilla / Mass effect. AA is not an issue for me, i'm more concerned with AF settings and that would be it.

There usually isn't much of a performance hit with maxing out AF.

Definitely upgrade to 1080p if you can. The 5770 should be sufficient, but if possible, a 5850 would certainly be better.

The power supply is rather overpowered, especially since this isn't an uber high-end build and you're not overclocking.

I'd say get 4GB ram now, but add the other 4GB in another year or two.

Ditto on the PSU. A 650W would be plenty.

I would say that you've got the budget to go 1080P now. You should be able to get a pretty nice display for $300. That'll improve every aspect of your computer usage, not just gaming. As others have mentioned, the 5770 will struggle a bit with high AA settings at 1080P.

If you can afford the RAM, I'd say go for 8GB. Then if you upgrade to CS4 in the future (which will make very good, liberal use of your RAM), you'll have plenty to go around. The 5770 is quite decent, but if you can, get an 5850, especially if your gaming tastes change to more DirectX-11 games. Otherwise 2x 5770s would probably work for your needs.

Alright, I was able to get my old account back (thank you harvey!).

I could squeeze in another 4 GB if it doesn't affect my performance.

I'm just curious if all the components will fit on my old case from my old build (sempron paris build lols !)

cooler master centurion 5

5850 > 5770x2. Easily. Better minimum frames and less hassle.

well, 5850 cost $300 a pop on newegg, I looked at anandtech's review on the 5770 CF > 5850 atm. Unless i'm missing something.

Unless if there's a great setup for a 5850 CF under $1500 including taxes...then i can change my mind.

I don't think this thread should have Crossfire written anywhere 😀. Even a single 5770 can handle MOST 1080 gaming fine. A 5850 would be ideal, but I wouldn't stretch my budget or sacrifice performance anywhere else.

a 450 would be plenty.

i have basically the same rig (more harddrives) on a corsair HX520. and even that's well above what the rig would actually use.

I made a slight changes of the order to get the cooler master 690 instead of the 590. plus more 120 mm fans (blue led). 30 more bucks didn't hurt.

now, it's time to wait for the build 1-2 weeks !!

Quite silly to get 2x5770 in my opinion. Since software is the main issue with Crossfire, somebody else putting it together for you doesn't really help at all.

How would that be an issue? I just figured I wont have the time to put the stuff by myself with the work schedule I have. Why not pay a little extra $60.

I wasn't saying that I had anything against having someone else put it together. I'm agreeing with you that your time is valuable! I'm pretty sure you would rather be playing games instead of twiddling with the Crossfire drivers (cause that's what you WILL be doing whenever a new game comes out!).
