Because it didnt get good enough ratings.
And before people say "it was given horrible time slots". So was King of the Hill throughout its run, but it still managed to pull in ratings.
Wrong. Futurama was at 7:00, KotH was at 7:30. During football season (which is when new episodes air) 7:00 overlaps the 4:00pm football games and was usually prempted. About 1 in 4 shows actually aired at the proper time, the rest were either cancelled, rescheduled or joined halfway through. By 7:30 the football games were over and KotH was aired normally.
What the ignorant fail to recognize is that KotH began in the 8:30 time slot. It was allowed the chance to find a stable audience with The Simpsons acting as the perfect lead-in. Only after having built it's core viewers thanks to a stable time slot and a big hit as a lead-in was it moved to 7:30. Futurama never got that sort of treatment. It was too edgy and was cast off on it's own from day one with no time slot, no scheduling consistency and no similar show as a lead-in. History is bearing out just how good Futurama and The Family Guy are. Despite being on cable and despite being broadcast into 10 million fewer homes than the big network show, both have opened up a big old can of whup-ass on Leno and Letterman with the key 18-49 demographic. Fox programmers screwed the pooch on both Futurama and Family Guy, neither was ever given the chance to succeed by having a good time slot and an acceptable lead-in.
