Fusion Sport?

My lease is up in about a month and I've started to look at new cars. Anyone have any opinions or experience with the '11 Fusion Sport? I dislike the fact that the grill is black on the Sports, but the price is practically the same as the SEL V6, but with a 3.5L instead of 3.0L, 18" wheels instead of 17", etc.. Seems hard to resist.

I think the sport is a great idea. It's a good car, nice ride. I liked the instrument panel layout a lot. I would totally buy one.

What other cars have you looked at? What features do you require want?

Well to be honest, I haven't looked at much else. I love my '08 Fusion and I've been eying a new one ever since the '10 refresh. Between that and being able to get A/Z pricing from Ford (plus the word on the street is that they may be increasing incentives soon...), I haven't done much looking. But I would be open to hearing about other options.

What I'd consider is a small or mid-size sedan, preferably on the sporty side, that can handle Michigan winter roads. FWD is sufficient. I'd love a manual but most of my driving is stop-and-go on my commute and I think I'd go nuts. I need a USB jack to listen to music and charge my iPod; I love Sync. Other than those necessities, I decided I would splurge on the moonroof + sound system package for the Fusion, mostly for the sound.

I could afford more but frankly, while I do enjoy driving my cars, I have little desire for anything faster, more luxurious, or expensive than something like the Fusion.

Even though FWD is sufficient, I would suggest taking an AWD vehicle like a Subaru Impreza out for a test drive while there is still snow on the ground. One test drive and you'll be sold on AWD.

The only down side is that it's harder to negotiate the price on AWD vehicles this time of year. In June, everyone talks about how they're going to get a Prius or a tiny little Honda Fit. Then winter rolls around and everyone is talking about a Subaru Impreza or a Jeep or a truck with lots of ground clearance.
 
Don't love the Imprezas, although I suppose I should drive an AWD just to see. Fusions are available in AWD as well, but the ~$2k price tag makes it meh for me.
 
IIRC, the SEL has more "luxury" features like automatic headlights and automatic climate control that the Sport / SE models don't have. The sport has the select-shift automatic and the more powerful 3.5L, though.

Personally, I think the Sport is a great car if you can find it at the right price. AWD would be nice to actually put the power down to the road, but in any case, keep in mind that it's just a family sedan and not a sports car. You won't want to beat the crap out of these things.
 
All I know about the Fusion is it has better "PROJECTED" resale value than Camry. Oh and the fancy radio that does everything except wipe your butt. At least, that's all their commercials are about.

Looks like automatic headlights are standard on the SE in '11, so they're on the Sport as well. The SEL has dual-zone automatic climate control and the Sport doesn't mention it, so that's something I'll have to look into...although I'm not sure that I care. The Sport also doesn't mention heated seats, which the SEL has and I really don't care about, or the keyless entry pad, which I do care about quite a bit.

edit: Gah, looks like all of the "SEL luxuries" are contained in the ~$2k "driver vision package", which includes BLIS (don't care), rear-view camera + reverse sensing (don't care), rain-sensing wipers (nice but unnecessary), heated front seats (REALLY nice but unnecessary), dual-zone automatic climate control (nice but unnecessary), and keyless entry pad (pretty much necessary). So that's where they get ya. Maybe I should just go for it, meh, it's only money.

Brings the sticker price up to over $30k which makes me feel dirty, but after A/Z pricing and incentives, if I can keep the payment below $350 I guess I don't mind.

lol so this is pretty much a PSA that the OP is going to buy a Fusion Sport. It's a sharp car, rcpratt. I'm wondering though what A-Z pricing is?

A dealer is pricing out three different Fusions for me tonight: (1) SEL, FWD, Moon + Tune Package (401A), (2) Sport, FWD, Driver Vision Package & Moon + Tune (402A), (3) Sport, AWD, Driver Vision Package & Moon + Tune (402A). I'll share the A/Z prices tomorrow or whenever he gets back to me if you want.
 
The sport looks pretty good but I don't see many of them. The 3.5l engine does sound significantly better though and if I wasn't to get the hybrid model I would choose it.
 
I'd be curious to hear OP's opinions after test driving a 2010 Legacy GT. Honestly interested - it seems to compete well against the Fusion Sport in features and price.

-Automatic headlights are extremely annoying. I made a post a year ago about how I can't turn off my Corolla's headlights, so they shine right into peoples houses when I'm idling in the driveway waiting for them.
-Every car has keyless entry. My 2006 Civic had it, my 2010 Corolla has it, my brother's 2005 Impreza has it, parents 2005 Altima has it, etc.


When looking at the options, try to keep in mind what those things actually cost if you were to buy them separately. The heated seats in my car were $10 each. Yeah they're cheap made in China pieces of shit with no on/off switch, but they work fine. Dealers also like to sucker people into buying a remote starter for $500. You can get one at Best Buy or any other shop for $100 plus installation.... so about $200. The stuff you should care about is the stuff you can't get after you bought the car. You can't suddenly decide you want AWD and you can't suddenly decide you want the V6 instead of the I4.

Not keyless entry, the actual keypad thing for when I lock my keys in my car every other week. Maybe that's something I could install or have installed after, but meh. I suppose I'll look at individual prices for all the things I'd need/want.

Never assume that a car company is not run by retards. Ford probably does allow the headlights to be turned off if the car is in park or something, but make sure you double check that. Toyota is run by retards, so the lights on my car cannot be turned off even when the car is in park and the parking brake is on.


I never thought about the locking keys in the car situation, but you're right about that being a nice feature. Also check if Ford has any option for RFID entry. That's a stock feature on my Corolla; I never need to take my keys out of my pocket and that's why they never get locked inside 😉

That sounds like DRLs and not the full headlights, and even so, it sounds wrong.

I saw some thread somewhere about disabling that on the Corolla by removing a wire from the DRL module.

Totally fine, as I didn't know Ford offered a Sport version of the Fusion which was notably different. Made me go look at it, ya know? 😉

Also, I meant to say that I don't know what the term "A-Z pricing" means. If I had to guess it's some kind of out-the-door price?
 
It's not the DRL. The DRL turn on when the car is first started, then it detects darkness and turns on the driving headlights. It's absolutely retarded.


Lots of people have complained about the same thing. The solutions are always complicated and sometimes illegal. It's illegal to mess with the DRL in Canada.

I have an 06 Corolla and the headlights come on automatically, which is great. Sometimes though, I am waiting for my kids to come out of practice at night and it's cold so I want to leave the car running, but I want the lights off so they don't shine in anyone else's car. I can't find a way to shut off the lights with out turning off the engine. Does anyone know a way to do this?

How do i turn off automatic lights on 2001 toyota corolla?
I hate that my lights come on automatically as soon as my engine is turned on. It bothers my roommates and neighbors for example when i'm returning home from work and the lights shine in the windows. I want to be able to park in the driveway and turn off the headlights without having to turn the engine off. I was able to do this in my honda and miss that feature. Is there a way to disengage the sensor?

This one is just ironic. I bitched about the same exact problem of shining light in through the windows. My last car was a Honda too. My Honda didn't fuck around this bad. Honda > Toyota.

A/Z pricing is basically the employee discount.

Do they only offer the keypad as part of the package? I hate when they lump the features you don't want with those that you do. Wonder if it's easier for them to make like that or they have to so that people will buy the useless features.
 
Yes, only that package on the Sport. It's standard on the SEL. I'm sure it simplifies manufacturing processes, but it is annoying. Fortunately, I think the other things in that package are probably useful enough that I won't mind too much.
