I would have more respect for them if they just contacted the admin and let them know where the hole was.

Why would I need to know it was hackable? Nobody but the admin needs to know where the holes are.

Hacked since 4:02 PM and still down... I wonder what it takes to reverse the damage, if any.

restore or copy the original files
if they just replaced the default.htm and left the other content intact, it should take 3 seconds

It should have been done then, since the rest of the site is clearly live, with only the landing page altered.
