Further fragmentation of Android

http://www.droiddog.com/android-blog/2009/12/android-app-store-fragmentation/

I'm saddened that what Google had hoped was a move to turn the carriers into dumb pipes is turning into proprietary OS's with proprietary app stores, and proprietary phones, there's no interoperability between carriers for high speed wireless, the consumer loses again... 🙁

The other thing that's starting to concern me about Google, is that they're ascribed to have noble intentions, but are in fact in bed with the companies they claim to want to make more consumer friendly.

Sigh... I had such high hopes for Google, as I think everyone else did.

In the end, they're a massive corporation, willing to sell out for a few $. At least Apple isn't masquerading as the consumer's savior.

I don't see it as Google's fault. The manufacturers design their phone around one OS, then it gets upgraded. AFAIK, its their fault for not making apps/phone backwards/future compatible.

The problem isn't that massive anyways. I have a myTouch that had cupcake on it when I bought it. I downloaded all the apps that I wanted. When 1.6 came out, I had to update some of the apps but it was no big deal. None of them didn't work.

And right...its much worse for Google to cooperate with multiple carriers and multiple manufacturers to give customers a choice. Its so much better to force one phone on one carrier down their throat like Apple did.

In Apple's defense they changed the telecom world, and they won't be exclusive after June... They've jumped to other carriers in other markets when the exclusivity deals were over.

Google phones are currently shipping with OS 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, and 2.1 is on the Nexus One... Now with the app store(s) fragmenting, yeah...

I'm not an Apple fanboy (but I am a stockholder-they're kicking major ass too)

oh don't get me wrong...Apple kicked some major ass with the iphone. Its taken how long for others to get this far?

Give the Android phones a bit to go through their growing pains. Nothing is really broke right now...it may take some time for things to get to where they need to be.

It's not Google's fault carriers don't put the latest phones with the latest version of Android. Also everyone forgets that 2.0 was a Motorola Droid exclusive and not released to anyone else at all until it came out so 2.0 hasn't even been out for that long. 2.1 isn't out yet either so people just need to relax.

Fragmentation is going happen, it's just a side effect of newer hardware.
It just seems to be happening more rapidly with Android than with other mobile OSes.
I fully expect there to be major fragmentation with the iPhone OS when Apple releases the 4th gen iPhone. You can only support backwards compatibility so much.
