when you moved out on your own, did you have furniture to take with you or did you have to buy?

what did you buy and how much did it cost?

when the hubby and i moved in together, we had a bit of both.
my bed/matress we had. a bedroom set as well...
other than that, we bought everything else... sofa, loveseat, coffee tables, end tables, kitchen table and chairs, entertainment center.

we shopped around and got some ok deals. On the furnature, we got it at a stores Clearance Center for pretty cheap.
It is certainly not of superior quality, but we still have it today, over 5 years later in good condition. That is the only thing we have the same.

If you are looking, really try and be open and creative as to where you shop for things.

🙂

PS, i could not tell you how much we spent... maybe my other half could though 🙂

I swiped my bedroom set from my parents when I moved out. I had to buy the rest: sofa, love seat, end table, coffee table for about $2,000 from Sofa Express. Computer desk from OfficeMax for $250. Still need to get a dinette set

The sofa and love seat are marine blue in microfiber with reclining backs.

It was around $400, simply because we know someone who works at a furniture store. We originally bought it for $700ish, then when he found out he told us to cancel the order and he bought it with his discount.

when I moved out I used 'hand me downs' from friends and coworkers.

people are pretty understanding - now when I hear of someone first moving out i always try and think of something to give them..

i still have a lot of stuff though.. moved out when i was 17, im 21 now.

i still have my:

couch, coffee/end tables, kitchen table (which is actually a patio table.. shhhh!)..

I've bought new (and good quality):
desk/credenza/file cabinet, 2 beds, bedside tables/dresser

i could take my bedroom stuff (although my bedframe is really old and crappy, i'd like to get a new one), i have a 19" tv, and my computer desk.

i'd need living room stuff like sofa, chairs, maybe a coffee table.

i'd also need appliances like refrigerator, washer, dryer.

and then all the other little things like some bookshelves, towels, kitchenware...

ugh...just seems like its going to be so expensive. knightbreed, did you take out a loan or just used money you had? getting all that would take a good bit of my savings out.

DO NOT take out a loan. make do with what you have - which is enough to get started.

I'd start out focusing on getting a used washer/dryer. I literally threw away a perfectly good washer last week that i was keeping to give away - keep an ear out for someone looking for a new washer/dryer. normally only one broke, but they want the replacements to match. offer to pick it up.

things you really NEED:

microwave - again.. keep an ear out. garage sales, wal mart at last resort.
silverware - costco or other big name store

washer/dryer - laundrymat until you have one

sofa/chairs/coffee table - can wait. garage sales

You are moving to a place that doesn't have a refridgerator? Washer and dryer can be put on hold if there is a laundrymat. We got our washer new from an AT member's store.

also - go buy/find 6 concrete blocks and a 2x12 and make a bookshelf. it really doesn't look that bad - ends up being a 'contemporary deco type' thing

One more thing, learn to love Target clearance end caps. They are a neverending source of home needs. We bought our first silverware set for $5 and it lasted us until we got married last year. You can also find appliances, last time we were there they had microwaves for $30.

I payed out of pocket. I saved up some money for "moving expenses", because I knew I wanted new furniture.

You don't have to go the same route I did. If you are trying to save some cash, don't bother with the end table or love seat. Or start asking friends and family if they are trying to get rid of any old furniture. You can buy stuff on the cheap from people you know. Or check Craigslist, Ebay, or garage sales.

I had a bunch of walmart furniture when I first moved out. I'm planning to move (LA to FL) next month and will be ditching everything except for my couch and chair.

i'm not moving out yet and haven't really started looking too much yet. do most apartments or houses already come with a refridgerator?

i'm just trying to get an idea how much all this will cost to see if its posible for me to move out - which is why i haven't really done much until now. still not sure whether i can afford everything or not.

I was lucky and was able to take pretty much everything from home or my grandparents. I got my whole living room set - a recliner, chair, two end tables, and a coffee table - from things my grandparents had either already replaced and stored in their attic or were about to replace. My parents wanted to get a futon and new entertainment setup in my old bedroom, so I was able to take my bedroom set with me: the bed, nightstand, two dressers, my bookshelf, etc. As for appliances, my apartment came with fridge, washer/dryer, dishwasher, and stove. All I needed was a microwave - my parents gave me their old one that was replaced when we moved 6 years ago - and a toaster, which I got after moving for about $15.

I bought furniture (and still have some more to buy eventually) when I got my condo.

Bed frame, mattress, couch, chair, desk, a couple stools, coffee table, entryway table, bookcase, nightstands, TV stand, and a rug. I still need to get some sturdy bookcases, a couple more rugs and some patio furniture when I get around to it.

I think I spent in the neighborhood of $4,000 for what I have.

I'll be able to take my bedroom set, which also includes a inner spring mattress futon. My solid oak desk, and a bunch of book shelves I've bought over the years. I have a bunch of kitchen appliances, like mixer and microwave. I'm going to dread buying all of that furniture, that's why over the summer I plan on hitting garage sales and esate sales hard and getting some good bargains.

LOL...let's see...
Bedroom set from my aunt - free.
Matress/Boxspring - $400
Desk from in-laws - free
Sectional couch from parents- free
DR set from friends - $300
Piano from friends - $125 to have it moved
Couch from deceased friend - free
LEGO Coffee Table - $50

Ask around. It's easy to get handmedowns and donations. I found that some people are just looking for a good excuse to buy new stuff and give you the old stuff!

I only took a bed, dresser, and computer desk when I moved out. My grandparents were moving at the time so they donated a couch and chair set.

I didn't start buying furniture until I got married.

Computer armoire was $300. Full size bed $300 something without head/foot boards. Nice couch and rocking/reclining loveseat for $800 apiece. TV stand was $120. Also bought a set of wood end tables for $200 apiece.

Didn't neet major appliances because I was in a furnished apartment.
