funny looking scans - how do I get rid of the checkerboards?

When I scan at resolutions higher than 72 I get this odd checkerboard pattern on the scans (when scanning glossy color photos).

I can't figure out how to get rid of it, or even what's causing it.

Any thoughts appreciated.

I'm using an Epson 636U

hey i don't think its the device, we see them at my work too. but when they get to press the checkerboards isn't their, its just a "ghost" i think

There should be a setting in your scanning software to fix that problem. Can't remember what it's called, deinterlace? maybe or moire' control? or something like that.
