They always make sure to double-check every setting on my computer before I can pass on to the "second tier" of technians
It's especially funny when you're running *nix and they say, "But you must have the networking control panel"

i'm the helpdesk at my company... and, we HAVE to have people check all that normal crap....
you simply would NOT belive the crap that people do....
YES there's a reason I ask if your computer has a phone line hooked into it....
YES there's a reason i check to make sure your mail servers are correct....
YES there's now a reason i ask if you're dialing the dial up number on a cordless phone......(i banged my head on my desk for 5 minutes after i figured out she was just turning her computer on, dialing the number on her phone, and setting the phone down near the computer.)

I have actually had talk someone into turning thier computer on so I could help them. People are not always that bright.
