Funny desktop question

For some strange reason, one day a little white box(with red cross in it) appeared on my desktop! It looks like when a picture does not load on a website...

This object is situated a little to the left of the center of my desktop.

if a change my backround it still exists!

PLEASE HELP 🙁

A cross or an "x"? What happens if you right-click on the box and choose Properties from the context menu? Have you tried turning off Active Desktop (Web Content on the desktop)?

I am running Xp-Pro, did not even know you could run active desktop! ( If so, how do i turn it on/off?)

If i right click on it, it does nothing... acts the same as anywhere else on the desktop...

Thanks for trying prosaic😉

Yes, Active Desktop is integrated into Windows XP. It's running by default, I guess, allowing you to choose whether or not to show icons and whether or not to lock Web content just by right-clicking on the desktop and going into the Arrange Icons submenu off of the context menu.

When you say that "it does nothing" when you right-click on the red x what exactly do you mean? Do you actually mean that you get no context menu? What about when you right-click on some other part of the desktop?

Not sure how the problem arose, but you can try this

Right click on desktop -> settings->themes

select windowsXP and this should revert all changes to the current theme including the desktop.

Good Luck

Afraid none of those worked!🙁

If i right click on the "X" it acts as the desktop, same menu and everything!

Any more Ideas?🙂

Did you try any of the alternative settings on the desktop? Don't just look at that context menu, use it!

I suspect that you have installed or set up some type of Web content to be displayed on the desktop, and that the desktop can't find the designated target for display. I never use any of the lousy third party applets myself, so I don't have a clue as to how you go about ridding yourself of them or controlling them -- other than to suggest removing them. If this has been done using the Windows XP desktop controls you should go into the Display Properties dialog, click on the Desktop tab, click on the Customize Desktop button, then click on the Web tab on the resulting Desktop Items dialog. See anything interesting there?

You're welcome. If you didn't specifically enable this, then you should try looking around to find out what did. There is some sneaky stuff floating around on the Web, and you don't want to be using software that just presumptuously takes control of your desktop. But at least Active Desktop is solid now. You should see what it could do to an NT4 system!!! 😉
