thanks. i feel dumber now for reading that. in the interest of adding something useful to this thread, Opera will not show the quick reply box if you set it to identify as IE.

Interesting. Is that because it has not only identify itself as IE but also "mimic" IE in certain respects? That would lead to what you are describing.
