Original Post:
Need you guys to look over the components and comment...

Finalised & ordered:
Memory: Corsair 1GB kit
Proc: A64 3000+
Mobo: DFI Lanparty UT 250Gb
Case: Antec Sonata

I've got almost everything else for the system (HDD, vid card, DVD burner). This is not intended to last me very long (1+ yr max)... so recommendations on how to cut prices are welcomed. It the DFI lanparty a better board? I am going with safe bets here. Maybe gonna do a little overclocking.

I need to find a case for this though.... any recommendations? I need something cheap... maybe something I can put a good power supply into. Again... need peoples input here.

I ended up getting the Sonata case. Everything came in monday, put it all together.... and press the power button. No go... :( Fan on the case spins for 1/2 a second and dies down. Then the power has to be puilled for it to work.

Each component is thoroughly tested: ended up that it would boot up if the Floppy Pwr connector to the Video card (Radeon 9500) is connected, it will not boot up. With the power connector pulled, it boots till the point where the error comes up saying"You havent connected the power cord!". I think it is a power problem. Disconnect HDDs, CD drive... only CPU, mobo, mem, vid card on the power supply now. Still no go :(

So I obviously think the vid card is fuxored, and put it back in the old machine. Old machine boots up fine with it!!! I'm like WTF!!!???!

So now I think the mobo is scrooed. Get another vid card (GeForce3 Ti200), and the thing boots up. Install windows and I come straight here to bitch and ask for help. (WoW IS installing in the bkground though :) )

So... any ideas guys?

Cliff notes: NEED HELP :(

Ahh, ok.. well DFI is great overclocker, and a good mobo, asus is a good mobo, both are very reliable boards. Sonata is a good popular case, and the power supply seems fine for your setup, though you did not specify a graphics card which is one of the most dependant PSU components

ok I cant say much about the cpu + board, Im just out of the loop
but I hear good things about amd 64 and asus has always been a good brand, so Id say your good there
the ram looks decent
case, yes antec is good choice

cant say much more, if you ask me to build it, Id do very similar, maybe except different ram since Im on the low timings hunt right now, but you prolly dont need that

ok... gfx is 9600 for now.. might upgrade to a 6800gt later. Also putting in 2x HDDs, plextor DVDRW.

You mentioned overclocking... but I do not think that the memory I have selected will allow me to do much of that.

Is there any other cases that I should look into?

I thought you meant overclocking the CPU, but its locked right? I cant remember, I haven't used an AMD Chip in a while, I think that, that case is the best choice, unless you want to dish out some more cash, get a PSU less case, and buy a decent Antec 420 Watt, or something, I don't 'forsee' any problems with that setup, but then again.. you never know with generics, if you plan to use a 6800GT I'd say definately, get a name brand, and higher Wattage PSU..

dont worry about ram and OCing, you can always put a divider and run your cpu as high as it will go

Id say stick with antec, but thats biased I guess, I just like em too much, very good built quality IMO
chieftec, but thats pretty much antec too :)

The Antec 380w PSU will work fine with the specs you listed there. As you can see, I have a S754 A64 3200 in a MSI K8N Neo Platinum board. It's been working great for me so far. When I got my machine, I was looking at either the Asus board you mentioned or this MSI one - either would probably be a good choice.

I think you will get more bang for your buck if you go with an AMD 64 3200 Winchester. They are really nice chips, and you can easily overclock them later. They oc really nicely, a lot of people ehre on the forums have them.

thanks for the advice guys... since everyone has positive opinions, i might as well go with this selection.

I havent touched OCing for so long.. I havent worked with dividers :)

/EDIT: thanks for the info waldo... i'll look into it. Is the OC using stock cooling?

You are welcome :)

Dividers are easy, when you decide to OC, go into bios and switch ram speed from 400 to 320 and go

If you're not going to be using the system long (a year, max, as you said), and considering your current system, I think you could get a good setup with a good Athlon XP processor and board, with some solid memory (doesn't need to be top of the line).

Went with the DFI board instead to save a buck or two.... and ended up with the sonata case itself.

Someone mentioned Winchester, but I think that is only for S939. Anyway, once I get out of college, i'll have a bit more money :). Had been scrounging up for this for a long time. Wish me luck on the build!
