IBM DestStar 75GXP, 46G hard drive. Five approximately equal partitions. Occasional clunk comes out of her. Then, defragging the C drive, (OS), and it kept hanging and making unusual noises. Finally finished. Ran IBM's utility and it comes up with some bad sectors. Still booting fine, though. Am I effed? Do I have a future paperweight?
Should I be at mwave.com scouting prices for a replacement? Or is this puppy salvageable?

"IBM DestStar 75GXP, 46G hard drive" <---THAT and THIS--->"Occasional clunk comes out of her. Then, defragging the C drive, (OS), and it kept hanging and making unusual noises. Finally finished. Ran IBM's utility and it comes up with some bad sectors" is unfortunately all you need to know. Back it up now and get a new drive. There are approximately 100 threads w/the same story as yours on the AT forums. I've stuck with Maxtor and haven't had a problem yet. Not bashing IBM, just stating my situation.

From what I've read here, lately, when you RMA your drive, IBM just sends out a refurb. I wish you luck. Good luck!

If I need to buy a new, say, 60GXP, what is the difference between the retail hard drive versus the bare drive version that I see listed on the various retailer's websites?

Simple, and this applies to HDs, videocards, soundcards, NICs, etc.

RETAIL: Product comes in fancy, colorful box with instructions, driver/utility CDRom/floppy, cables, connectors & instruction sheet/book.

OEM/BARE: Product comes in "white box" (you see "white box only" a lot on Pricewatch) by itself. No cables, drivers or fancy packaging.
