Personally i think it should be legal. as long as the people involved are of legal age and concenting adults i have no problem with how they practice thier religion or the way they choose to live. why should i care if some guy in Utah or Arizona has 3 wives and 10 kids. if that is the life they want to live then so be it. I also think since they have to live in the shadows to advoid the law their rights are being violated.

CENTENNIAL PARK, Arizona (Reuters) - When Ephraim Hammon returns home from a day of working construction near Arizona's border with Utah, he's greeted by his wife SherylLynne. And then by his wife Leah.

Polygamy, once hidden in the shadows of Utah and Arizona, is breaking into the open as fundamentalist Mormons push to decriminalize it on religious grounds, while at the same time stamping out abuses such as forced marriages of underage brides.

The growing confidence of polygamists and their willingness to go public come at an awkward moment for mainstream Mormons, who are now in the spotlight as Republican Mitt Romney, a prominent Mormon, seeks the U.S. presidency.

The Salt Lake City, Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon church, introduced polygamy before the Civil War but banned it in 1890 when the federal government threatened to deny Utah statehood. Today, about 40,000 "fundamentalist Mormons" in Utah and nearby states live polygamy illegally.

Romney, whose great-grandfather had five wives and whose great-great-grandfather had a dozen, has dismissed the practice as "bizarre" -- a comment that infuriates Hammon, whose father and grand-father practiced plural marriage.

"If it was me, I wouldn't apologize for my past. My ancestors did what they did. I can't help that," said Hammon, 36, who legally married SherylLynne, 32, in 1994 and was joined with Leah, 21, a decade later as his "celestial bride" in a religious ceremony that has no legal binding

I think it should be legal...

EDIT: To clarify, I'd support it being legal if there were rules of consent and a minimum age of like 18 or something.

No, because the girls are exploited (some marry as young as 14, to men who are in their 40s and 50s), and the boys are often kicked out to keep the female to male ratio in the elders favour.

If some lucky dude (or girl) can really score 2 women who are willing to marry him, then i would say yes, but these 'Mormons' who practice this, brainwash the boys and girls, and they take advantage of the welfare system to have dozens of kids.

Polygamy is icky. Forcing children to marry dirty old men. Cousins marrying, etc. It's not healthy in any way.

It's not all "Big Love".

Yeah, and later on a few alimony payments! :p

I don't want one wife. I can't imagine the grief multiple wives could bestow upon a man.

So the new wife was 21? Sounds like he's a smart guy who's upgrading to a newer model while keeping the older and functional one active to lessen the workload.

Thumbs up, in my opinion.

i guess if it doesn't hurt other people. but why would you want more than one person complaining to you. i'm sure mormons frown upon group action though. so what's the point of doing it?

as far as the original topic, has anyone ever heard of polygamy where one woman has several husbands or is that called something else?

thats not polygamy thats incest.

i think polygamy should be legal. Between adults anyway.trouble is the one "mormom" sect kicks the boys out of the church and then forces the young girls to merry old men. that is wrong on many diffrent levels.

but with 3 adults why not?seems to me it would be usefull.

It is their life and their religion, they should be able to do whatever they want.

However, there can and should be consequences. For example, we shouldn't be forced to rewrite the whole tax code just to accomodate you. If you have more than two adults in the family, you get taxed at the highest rate possible for singles. Or, you forgo all forms of welfare or other low-income support. Etc. We shouldn't be force to subsidize that odd behavior.

Also, we should inspect the situations closely. 14 year old brides should be illegal and any situation like that should include jail time. Same goes with any other forced, nonconsentual, behavior.

Finally, women should be able to marry multiple men.
