Gain and Losses when Upgrade to Windows 10
Be cautious with the word upgrade, not every feature from Windows 7/8.1 will be carried over to Windows 10. You will loss some features by upgrading, but most of those are legacy features in return the new features from Windows 10 are there for you to further explore.
Functions will be removed from Windows 7 when upgrade to Windows 10 are:
Windows Media Center, it has announced for sometimes now that this feature will be removed and not available in Windows 10. If you rely on this day-to-day the best suggestions is to hold off the upgrade. It shouldnt be a surprise to you as Microsoft is pushing live streams on the other product line, Xbox One, are receiving regularly updates on media features and functions.
DVD playback, will not be supported out of the back. That shouldnt be a deal breaker as there are plenty of third-party software out there allows you to do so, most notably VLC player.
Desktop gadgets will no longer available. Its understandable as a duplicated feature in Windows 10 for its new Notification center. You can consider this as a result of an upgrade, duplicated features will be removed and in turn new features will shine.
Preinstalled default Windows games, in Windows 7 and many previous versions there are default games pre-installed that are comes with Windows out of the box like Solitaire, Minesweeper and Hearts. Those games will be removed when you upgrade to Windows 10. But new versions of those games are available in Windows 10, so consider this as an upgrade to your existing default games.
The gains of Windows 10 are a list of new features that we are actually very excited about. Over the course of coming months we will be dive in into more details of those features and share any tips and tricks that come along the way.
The lack of DVD playback is very odd. That will catch out some grandpa's that upgrade their Windows 7 computer.
Windows Media Center is not part of Windows 10 and wont be available after upgrading to Windows 10. If you use Windows Media Center, we will alert you during upgrade that Windows Media Center is not available on Windows 10. We know that some users use Windows Media Center to play DVDs, and we are providing a free DVD playback app in Windows 10 for Windows Media Center users.
Gadgets and DVD playback did indeed die in Win8. Thought it was a bit weird how starting in Vista they included DVD playback, then turned around in 8 to remove it. OK then. Loss of gadgets does not bother me as I really only use it for my Garfield comic strip just for the fun of it 😛
I don't really use WMC but I could see how it could be a negative to some people.
I've never messed with Win10. Probably should. I'm happy with Win7 however and don't feel like changing the OS and breaking stuff. I've had this install since Win7 came out and it is like that old shirt - comfortable, worn perfectly, etc 😀
I removed my optical drive years ago.
I still have one because I have the bay for it (so why remove it) plus I do occasionally watch a blu ray.
i think the only reason i have a ps3 still is just to watch blu ray movies.
the only thing i miss on the list is the gadgets...but i got over it a long time ago. i used to just keep weather and a clock up anyway.
I use 8gadgetpack to restore my gadgets in win 8.1 and when I upgrade I'll use it again.
Seems like they are just misconstruing the information being presented. One must remember that both Windows 7 and Windows 8 users are affected by this upgrade. Noting the differences when upgrading from 7 to 10 and from 8 to 10 is necessary. This particular article specifically says that Windows 7 users will lose DVD playback when upgrading to Windows 10.DVD playback was removed in Windows 8. Only the purchase/installation of WMC allowed DVD playback (other than 3rd party programs like VNC). Since it's been essentially gone for almost 3 years, I'm a little confused as to why people are insisting that it's Windows 10 that's getting rid of it.
To Quote the website
Desktop Gadgets... though they where dead anyway.
No DVD Playback... thats a little odd, not sure why unless ms does not want to pay the .05 cents per copy of win 10 for the DVD decdoer
The Games... not sure... most of the win7 systems do not have them pre-installed but as long as they offer them should be fine
WMC -- Writing was on the wall anyway, as they did nothing with it in Win8/8.1
A blu ray drive for the computer is a heck of a lot cheaper 😛 Well, helped that it was just given to me for free lol. My PC is already hooked up to my TV.
