Fun with wide apertures

My camera's maximum aperture is 2.8 at 28mm so it's not quite as dramatic as the really wide prime lenses, but I still managed to have some fun with it and some toy soldiers that my daughter was playing with last night. I used spot focus to make the camera center on the head of each soldier individually.

For reference, these soldiers are just under 1 inch tall. Using the "middle" shot as a reference, that means I'm getting less than 1/2 inch DOF in these photos. :D

I did an overhead shot as well to show the actual positions of the soldiers in relation to the truck. I think the wide angle lens and overhead perspective makes it look like the guy with the machine gun is really short and "stocky". :)

I need to figure out a way to get shots of my girls from this perspective to see how they turn out. If I get some really good ones, I can keep them as blackmail material for when the girls get old enough to start dating.

your front shot looks a little soft compared to the others... but it might just be me.

It does to me as well. I think it's because the only thing actually in focus is the guy's head where the middle shot has the whole side of the truck in focus.

I don't have an SLR yet, unfortunately. I took these with my Fuji S6000fd. It has an f/2.8-49 28-300mm equivalent lens. I took all 3 at f/2.8, 28mm, 1/2 second shutter (the room has bad lighting and I didn't want a flash) with the camera sitting on the table right next to the truck.
