Fun with trying to rebook an airline ticket

So I'm headed to Nepal next spring to visit some friends. I booked the flight two months ago threw Orbitz, flying on India Air and Indian Air Lines. Plans have changed and I now need to leave and arrive back in Detroit.

So, it's my stupid fault for booking too far in advance, so I think, I'll have to pay some fees and the difference and I should be good. I call up Orbitz, tell them I want to make a change and fly out of Detroit. "You have paper tickets, you need to ship them back to us first."

So $25 later the tickets are back to Orbitz via Fedex. They arrived today so I call about making a change. I spend 90 minutes on the phone with Orbitz. I unfortunately can't switch my reservations to another airline (which is common and my own stupid fault), but heres the kicker. Air India doesn't fly out of Detroit. I just sent my damned tickets back for nothing.

Maybe I can just change the return date into Chicago. Nope. Orbitz isn't allowed to make those changes, I need to contact Air India. In the meantime, Orbitz now gets to send me back the tickets that I never needed to send them for a $26 delivery fee.

So I call Air India, and the phone just starts playing music. No menu, no indication of wait time, just playing music. I now find out, they can't do anything for me over the phone, I need to talk to a local ticket office. This is fantastic, because since Air India doesn't fly out of Detroit, I get to head to Chicago to attempt to try and change my ticket. Nothing like a 500 mile round trip just to try to change reservations. After another half hour on hold after calling back, I get the local Chicago ticket office number.

I call the local Air India office. No one answers. I left a message. We'll see if I get called back.

To top it all off, I've even more frustrated having spent three hours on the phone trying to decipher what the CSR in the Indian call center's are even saying. I expect to get Indian CSRs when calling Air India, but Orbitz's ones were just terrible. The Indian Airline CSRs were twice as easy to understand the as the ones for Orbitz.

No idea what to do anymore. I can't cancel the ticket and get any refunds. I'm debating just eating the whole cost of the ticket $1757 and rebooking through another service so I can fly out and get back on the dates I want.

My stupid fault for booking this much in advance, but I never ever thought I'd have this much problem trying to just extend my stay by a couple of days. Word to the wise, be very very careful who you book your tickets through.

Two things:

1) Never... Ever.. NEVER fly Air India...
2) When booking travel, specifially Int'l travel, ALWAYS book through the airline directly.

That being said, once you arrive in India, you should be able to visit the local ticket agency (or a local travel agent) and they should be able to make the change for you for a fee. I paid 200 US to change my ticket and fly Bom-Lhr-Jfk instead of Bom-Cdg-Ewr a couple of years ago... I never will fly Air India again in my life. Horrible experience throughout.

Yea, its a big reason why I'm debating just eating the cost of the ticket, and chalking it up to experience.

I wouldnt take it that far... 1800 is alot of money to throw away... Plus the cost of a new ticket probably wont be as cheap now, and possibly not even available...

Question.. Why did you book AI when so many other carriers go there? Was the decision solely based on price?

I cant beleive that sites like Orbitz/Expedia/Travelocity still exist, or still make money on flights at least. Most of the major airlines offer a guarantee that they will not find a cheaper fare anywhere on the net...

Couple that with the $5 booking fee that they all charge, and i am dumbfounded when i hear of people booking through them. I keep telling my family members the same thing, and yet they still soemtimes book through Expedia..

If anything, they are good to find the cheapest option, but then go to that carrier's website and book direct!

So I called Orbitz back about just canceling the flight. I wanted to know if I could just get a credit that I could use for future travel on Air India. I was told yes, and that as long as I book by August 22nd, 2008 I get the full price of the ticket back. Heres the kicker, it's Orbitz policy not to send any of that information until the ticket has been canceled. All I wanted was something in writing in my inbox stating all of that, but they won't send it to me until after they cancel the ticket, so I'm canceling on faith.

I called my CC company and at least they told me I could dispute the charges.

Why would you do this???? You still need to use that ticket on Air India next year!!! Did you even plan on going back within the next year?!??

You arent "getting the full price of the ticket back" you are getting a "store credit" that expires in 1 year and can only be used on Air India..

You should have just bit the bullet and got it over with on this trip... And you havent even found another flight yet for this coming trip!! Dang!

That's exactly what i do. It's usually $10+ cheaper to book directly with the airlines in my experience.

I haven't canceled yet. What I'm trying to figure out is if I can use the credit to fly into London or Frankfurt later, and if I just need to book by August 22nd, or fly by that date.

You could probably use it to fly anywhere Air India goes, but you need to complete your travel by Aug 22nd IIRC

Just use the ticket as is and try to change it in India for a cpl days later.... Trust me, its not worth the nonsense and hassle of trying to get the credit voucher, then trying to use it, etc etc..

The less you deal with these people, the better. TRUST ME

Well the other half of the equation is booking a flight from Detroit to Chicago, so I dont have to drive 5 hours each way and pay for parking. Only $130 roundtrip right now.

DTW-O'Hare is cheap... and worst case scenario its not a bad drive if it absolutely comes down to it...

Where do you live in Detroit? Anywhere near Livonia?
