Fun with other people's money: almost $6000 for one pc

I have that sense of "order confirmation email" giddiness and have to gloat a little.

A guy I know from church is having me build a new video editing system. It will be built around a Pinnacle DVD1000 card and needs to be fast and powerful. Here's what I just ordered after getting a recommendation from Pinnacle:

Pinnacle DVD1000
Tyan S2462NG MB (Thunder K7)
2 Athlon MP 2000+ Retail
2 512MB DDR PC2100 ECC Registered memory (memman)
Adaptec 29160 U160 kit
3 Seagate 36GB 10k U160
1 Maxtor 80GB 7.2k IDE
Visiontek Xtasy GF4 MX440 Dual VGA
Pioneer DVR-A04 DVD/CD-RW
Antec Plus1080 case (black)
black floppy
2 19" Viewsonic CRT monitors (black)
black Adobe Premiere keyboard

Spending other people's money is fun!! 😀😀😀

$6000 and you ruin it with a Nvidia card.

What a waste.

$6000, and he is only get 1GB of RAM? Should have replaced the SCSI card with a non Adaptec RAID card, otherwise there isn't much of a point in having 3 SCSI drives. Also, a NVidia card should have been your last choice, a Matrox G550 would have been a much better choice especially for dual monitor support.

Others have already nailed my first two gripes:

1) More memory
2) Matrox G450/G550

Other than that I'd say why not X15's for the HD's?

Viper GTS

Why would you want to use a $315.00 Thunder K7 w/out U160 SCSI and integrated video you wont take advantage of?

Wouldn't a TigerMPX be a more viable solution?

hmmm, for dual monitor support and some decent speed, i would take a radeon 8500 over the gf4... plus i would use ide raid and push some more money into a lcd or something else intresting
but still looks much nicer then i have =P

hehe

i was wondering about the video card. we'll see how the dual mx440 does, but the guy had major headaches with a matrox capture card in the past. Plus the G550/450 only have 32MB of memory (at least the ones at newegg do).

I went with the scsi card instead of the onboard because he'll probably want to use those scsi drives in another system some day. Plus it's 64/32 bit compatible and costs a few $ less than the onboard option. It's not a server, so why not use the PCI slots? 😛

I'm not 100% sure what an X15 is, but if it's a 15k rpm scsi drive, I didn't go with them because they're almost 2x as much as the 10k rpm. And there are three drives because he wanted 100GB of scsi hard drive space total. Software striping in win2k is supposed to be good for video capture... no raid card required.

Memory. The pinnacle card recommends 128MB of memory. If it can't do it's job with 1GB of memory, I don't know what to say.

Everything should be here in a few days. We'll see how it goes.

Oh, and the mpx is NOT compatible with the pinnacle dvd1000. Maybe the new "fixed" tyan board will work, but I don't want to wait for it to hit the channel just to be a compatablitiy test subject. The S2462 has been verified to work by Pinnacle support.
