Try this:

Make yourself a Mobius strip. Make it kinda wide or the next part gets difficult.

Cut it in half. What do you end up with?

Here comes the interesting bit:
Cut it in half again, now what do you have?

:D

Exactly what is a mobius strip (for us illiterate Swedish people)? ;-)

And darn it, can't quite picture it in my mind what would happen...kind of thinking it would create two interlocking pieces for the first step. If that's so, how is it cut in half again? Both strips cut, or just one? Or am I way off?
Ah, yup. Google helped me here. Cool.

What is it not?

A mathematician confided
that a Moebius band is one-sided
And you'll get quite a laugh
if you cut one in half
for it stays in one piece when divided.

I tried it once for kicks. You get two really thin loops that are twisted over in two places, and they're interlocked.

What happens if you do the same with a Klein Bottle? Aside from that, the quantity of water held by a Klein Bottle of one size is the same as a Klein Bottle of a different size. What is that quantity?

I have never heard of this mobius strip before, so I tried it. Very interesting results. I'm just glad I didn't read the links first. It would have spoiled the surprise.:)

I made one of those out of a strip of metal once. I put a twist in it and then welded the ends together. I then cleaned up the welds so you could not see the join. when I showed it to my work mates and explained what it was they thought I was mad. I have always been fascinated by the Mobius strip. Reminds me of story by Arthur C Clarke. It was about a planet that had a huge wall running around the equator. no one knew what was on the other side. So they decided to build a huge structure to allow them to get on top of the wall and see what was on the other side. the great day came when the giant ramp was ready and a volunteer was found to be the first to cross to the other side. he got to the top which was shrouded in cloud and made his way to the other side. He kept looking back to see his friends disappear in the cloud as he crossed the wall. when he lost site of his side ,his gaze was fixed on looking for the other side. as he went farther he began to see though the mist the outlines of people. As the outlines became clearer he was greeted by his friends waiting at the top of the wall. they asked him what was on the other side of the wall. He tried to explain there was no other side.
Arthur C Clarke uses the Mobius strip analogy to show that the planet had only one side. You need to read the story for it to make more sense

Osh1t. Hehe. That's a whole nuther thread man. You're going to have to bring the word spacetime into this somehow.

I suppose if the planet were small enough to circumnavigate, yet had enough mass to bend light significantly, it would create the effect of an endless plane.

A Mobeus strip behaves no different than any other knotted loop. There are alot of interesting knotted shapes in nature, especially in DNA.

I have seen that site before and I especially like the "Klein Bottle Hat - for the zero volume head."

if you think that is cool, try this:

make one mobius strip. make another but interlock it through the first one like two links of a chain. Next, make another mobius strip but interlock it through both of the previous mobius strips to get a circular chain of three links. Next, insert it into a bowl of water. Leave overnight and see what happens!
