FYI - A M80 is a quarter stick of dynamite

1. We took a thick pipe with a cap on one end,

2. Drilled a hole in the cap.

3. Put a M80 in the pipe so the wick was sticking out of the cap

4. Lit the wick ? turning this into a cannon

5. Lit another M80 and put it down the open end ? The projectile

6. Put it up against a rock

7. Big explosion

8. Pipe went flying

9. Pause

10. 150 meters away, in a neighbors window box , there is a second explosion.

11. Their bay window shatters

12. We pay $500 to fix it

I set off about 25 bottle rockets one night in my apartment. That was one hell of a mess.

another time - we were trying to make flame-throwers. so we would get cans of hairspray, bug spray, or wd40 and spay them over an open flame. I took a can of what I thought was just bugpspray (it turned out to be hornet & wasp spray which shoots a spray 30 feet." and set a lawnmower on fire when this huge flame shoots out of the can and into the garage.

It's a fuse, not a wick:

wick: A cord or strand of loosely woven, twisted, or braided fibers, as on a candle or oil lamp, that draws up fuel to the flame by capillary action.

fuse: A cord of readily combustible material that is lighted at one end to carry a flame along its length to detonate an explosive at the other end.

remember the scene in butterfly effect where the guy runs to a mailbox filled with explosives? in the next scene he wakes up with no arms, and his best buddy is fvcking the love of his life. i thought about him while reading your post.

you should be more careful lest you end up like him. you can still play with pyrotechnics..but blowing up someones window is not so cool.

Thanks cerebusPu - but all these stories are 20+ years old.

A completely seperate time we;

1: Bundled 3 M80s together and twisted thiers fuses
2: Lit them & put them into a mailbox
3: Ran
4: BIG EXPLOSION
5: Guy running away with me falls to the ground
6: The mailbox door blew off and flew 20+ feet, hitting him in the back of the head.

(3)M80s + (1) mailbox + (4) stupid kids = 911 + 1 ambulance + 2 weeks in hospital

Um... dumb questions:

1) You can buy a quarter stick of dynamite without a permit or something?

2) Where?

M80s are illegal now and have been for many years.

I was stuck in a little town in Kansas with my cousin. We noticed that the town got real quiet every day about 12 noon. Then a loud steam horn like on a train would go off, and the town would resume its normal small town routine.

We set off an M-80 around 11:58, just before the horn sounded. This really rocked their world. There were people coming out of their houses and shops to see what was going on. We could hardly contain ourselves.

FYI, no it isn't. That's a myth perpetuated by children who want people to think they're playing with something far more powerful than they really are. An M80 is about 2% of a stick of dynamite.

I was about to post the same thing... couldn't have said it better. We had M80's when I was a kid and were told they were equivalent to a quarter stick of dynamite. We buried one about a foot deep in the ground to make a crater. All we got was a muffled poof, tipping us off that we had been lied to.

edit: oh, and 150 meters away it landed in a window box?
1. He was wrong to call it a wick instead of a fuse.
2. He thinks it's a quarter stick of dynamite
3. He thinks it's enough to send a pipe 150 meters through the air. (that' 1 1/2 football fields away, more like the next block than a neighbors house)

I'm guessing the OP is about 12-14 years old, who feels he has to exagerate to impress us with his accomplishments.

No, they put 2 M80s in a pipe. The first one launched the second one, which traveled 150M, and landed in the window box.
Seems kinda far. We used to launch tennis balls this way ... pound a pipe into the ground, drop lit M80 in, stuff a tennis ball in on top. I figure we got about 100 yards out of that.

[edit] Well, that's how I read it the 1st time at least. Rereading it, it is a bit unclear.[/edit]

Just to clear up some confusion.

1: I wish I was 13 again, the stock investments I would have made knowing what I know now, would make my family and I rich. And what I know about women now you greatly improve my odds in those early years of actually getting some.

2: It was the second lit M80 that flew from the pipe to the neighbors widow box, not the pipe itself, the pipe did bounce about 10 feet. It was on the front yard of my parents house and flew across 3 neighbors' lawns to reach the house with the window box.

3: There is also questions as to how powerful and M80 was back in the late 70s (when they were legal) versus the ones made today.
comparing an M80 to a "quarter stick of dynamite" or similar exaggerations. Wrong. To begin with, a "quarter stick" of dynamite has 35 grams of pyrotechnic content, while a true M-80 has just under 3 grams. So even if they had a same chemical composition, an M-80 would have less than 10% of the power of a quarter stick of dynamite. But the composition in dynamite (which varies widely) is a high explosive, while the chemical composition in an M-80 (so-called "flash powder") is a low explosive, at least from a scientific standpoint. So really there is no legitimate way to compare an M-80 with a quarter stick of dynamite

4: now taking to account that his tennis balls flew 100 yards, and an M80 weighs less than an M80 and if it fit into the pipe more tightly would make my "story" much more plausable.

5: You are correct saying I am "ownd", my wife has had the bill-of-sale for about 5 years now. :p

So it was a tight fit on the pipe you put em into? Then I have no doubt you could get that kind of range.

Where'd you find M80's 5 years ago? Looked for em last time I was in Mexico and didn't see anything that looked similar to what I remember from as a kid.

When did I say I bought fireworks 5 years ago? I said in the late 1970s.

Whether you think I got 150yard from the shot is truly irrelevant since you clearly know little about ballistics or pyrotechnics.

Perhaps you should read the posts you reply to more closely or go to bed since it?s past your bed time.

I got the 5 years from the statement that your wife has a bill of sale (for the replaced window I presume) "for about 5 years now".

Uhm, ballistics is my job. I know a bit about explosives as well, although not pyrotechnics per se, though I certainly have a bit of experience with them. Remember, I'm the guy that talked about getting 100 yards from a tennis ball? Although, that might not be strictly relevant given the difference in ballistic coefficient.

Perhaps you should read the posts you reply to more closely or go to bed since it?s past your bed time.

WTF is your problem? If anything I was suporting & agreeing with you  I never claimed you were owned.
