Fun with an aviation transceiver

I got a nice handheld one for Christmas (JRC JHP-500), I've been having fun lately going up to my roof/deck and listening to the pilots and controllers. I live about 10 miles south of LAX so I can hear the big boys coming in, as well as 5 local small airports. It's kinda cool to see some 777 on final and be able to listen to him talk to the LAX approach controllers and tower. Good practice too as I get ready to start my instrument training. I also enjoy hearing ATC get pissed off when someone messes something up repeatedly 🙂 I'm tempted to test out the transmit range on this thing but I don't need federal marshals knocking at my door.

That is all.

Yeah, Not a good idea to transmit. I have a big airband base station and amp in my closet I've been itching to try, just not in the mood for jail 😉

I'm an amateur radio operator. Once, our local two-meter repeater developed a spur. Some of our local club members got a call from the fcc saying that a on flight from Dallas to Florida, the pilots had been able to hear their entire conversation, and that they (the pilots) were very amused, but that they (the fcc) would really appreciate it if we would get the spur fixed immediately.

how did you get a transrecivver.. i want to get a scanner though.. one day I will get my pilot's licence.

you can just buy them from aviation supply places. here's a link to mine transceiver (awesome store btw)

I decided to get one after I had an electrical failure one day coming back from Big Bear, no radios or anything. it was a bit disconcerting to see the fuel gauges drop to zero 🙂 handhelds don't transmit far but it's better than nothing if you get in trouble.
