edit the file called "hosts" in "C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc" on his computer

what this file does is when you type in an address in IE, and your hosts file has a specific IP assigned to that site, it goes to that IP instead.

So I type in www.slashdot.org, and my hosts file says www.slashdot.org points to 129.22.138.13(my school's website) then your friend is going to be surprised. It was funny to see my roomate's reaction.

"198.182.196.56 www.microsoft.com"

will send www.microsoft.com to www.linux.org

All versions of windows have hosts files. At least as far back as 95. Now the resolution order is different with the different OS's and they may handle cached addresses differently, but I suspect your "trick" would work on any Windows box.

Was it fun to wait watching forver until your partner finally typed an address that redirected him somewhere else? I guess I miss those nights with nothing to do in college...
