It is not a violation of the Geneva Convention for law enforcement to use tear gas.

The Chemical Weapons Convention is not the Geneva Convention.
Still, it's rather amusing that something agreed to be not used in war against combatants is wholly accepted to be used against civilians.
The stated reason is mostly due to escalation fears. Tear gassing a countries army would incapacitate them rather quickly. Why wouldn't they respond with some mustard gas?
Because in terms of warfare, the main reason we stopped using gas is that they're actually really really shitty at being a weapon of war.
Of course. They are non targeted and have massive collateral damage. Even in trench warfare gas was stupid.
This. Because chemical weapons have the potential to cause widespread non-combatant casualties and damage to areas not on the battlefield. AKA: Civilians.
So let's use it on civilians!

Pretty sure it's the same with Hollow points
That's why milsurp ammo is all FMJ, but police can use HP and JHP.
Can't be a war crime if you're not shooting at agents of a rival nation!
(I actually don't have a problem with police using these rounds; it's far more important for police to control over-penetration.)
