At approximately 01:30 hours on 02/18/13, a 24 year old non-student was assaulted on Delaware Avenue in the area of Haines Street. He was approached from behind by a light skinned black male, 5'10" - 6', thin build, unknown clothing description. During the assault, the victim was threatened with a handgun. After the initial assault, 3 more black males approached the victim and assaulted him as well. The victim was unable to provide any further description of these 3 suspects. The suspects were able to take the victim's wallet which contained 220 dollars U.S. currency. All suspects then fled eastbound past Haines street toward South Chapel Street. The suspects then met up with a suspect vehicle in the area of the Calvary Baptist church. The suspect vehicle is described as a dark colored sedan with possible Delaware registration. The incident is under investigation by the Newark Police Department.

I walked through that precise area last night 3 hours before this occurred, and I've walked through that area thousands of times over the last few years. Never had any incidents before, but this still happened.

And people call me paranoid for having a concealed carry permit.

Just cause you have a hand gun, doesnt mean you would of got the first shot off...Sounds like this guy got away with his life, perhaps if you pulled your gun out, you wouldnt have walked away?....

Especially if you pulled your gun on the first assailant, and he had 3 buddies (possibly also armed) waiting around the corner like this guy did.

Says he was threatened with the handgun during the assault. Assuming "during" implies "some time after the assault started", then the victim drawing a gun at the outset might very well have made a difference.

Yes, because criminals looking for an easy score are going to shout EN TARO ADUN! and engage the person shooting at them. There have been many reported instances where even a shot or two, that miss, are enough to send multiple assailants running.

Unarmed assailants will run, armed ones? You never know. This guy lived, and nobody knows what would have happened if he was armed and had tried to do anything. I was robbed at gun point and I had a gun, the 4 police that showed up all said I did the right thing by giving him the money and not trying to use the gun I had.

I certainly agree that drawing a gun would have made a difference. I'm just not sure it would have been a positive one for the victim.

And if the bad guy's gun is already pointed at you, yeah, you're pretty much fucked. In this case it doesn't sound like that's how it started.

I remember when I was at school at UT. Just about every single robbery/attack on campus was an asian victim and a black criminal. There was a period of time where the computers in the EE lab had warnings directed at asian students. On the upside, I felt pretty safe walking around campus as a white guy.
