Situation:
Primarily HTPC but occasional gaming PC (Games: Civ V, UT3)
Mini-ATX Case (Asus V3 P5G33 case to be exact) Upgraded internals; 650Watt Antec Earthwatts PSU, Asus P7H55-M Pro, I5-750, 4G Ram (for now),Win7 64bit Running at 1680x1050 on a dell flat panel.

the issue: Asus radeon HD4850 died on me (black screen reboots when gaming), replacements from asus do not work properly, and I have lost all patience with RMA back & forth (QC issue? problems vary on the cards I got back from "BSR" to 2d video corruption at the desktop).

Shoved in an old slow 7600GT to make it run in the interim (not really interested in RMAing for the THIRD time an improperly functioning 4850)

I need as good or better within this power envelope that exhausts outside of the case (I do not want heat to become an issue in a already tight thermal situation)

I need some good recommendations as to best replacement (I am thinking some flavor of 5770/ 6850/ GTX-460[?], not too sure though)

5770 will probably serve you well. The GTX 460 is a bit more expensive and faster. Just choose whatever is in your price range.

5770, 6850 or GTX 460 1GB. Depends on what you want to spend.

ok, so what i am asking is not translating...

Looking for SPECIFIC recommendations that exhaust outside the case. I actually did do some reading to get to the 5770/ 6850/ GTX460 part, but most of what I am seeing when looking do not really say if they push heat outside for certain, and I do not think the "egg" coolers or other "just dump the heat in the case" type of coolers are that forthcoming...

Basically, I want the cheapest that actually pushes it's heat outside the case, and I am not seeing a lot of confirmation as to where most of the waste heat is being dumped.. I "beleive" that the original phoenix shroud coolers do this, and there may be others as well.. that is what I am looking for !

InB4Banned I'd recommend a 6850 It's the best card out of all of those.

Any newer "low-mid" card that will beat your old one in performance will be producing a lot less heat than an HD 4850, so having complete exhausting from the rear isn't as critical. Basically, just look for a shroud that does at least attempt to exhaust most of its warm out (they're pretty easy to spot - shroud extending to or very nearly to the bracket). Every card - even those with blower type shrouds - have some warm air leakage. If you want pretty inexpensive this EVGA will definitely beat the HD 4850 for $99.99 AR (and EVGA does pay their rebates in 8 weeks without drama):

I have a GTX 460 1GB overclocked in a case almost as small as yours with this same HSF as this card. There is no excessive heat build up.

Reference cooler HD 5770s should fit the bill too for a bit more.

I think a reference cooler GTX 460 768 MB would be your best bet for a fairly cheap price:
