These work with SAS/SATA disks including notebook drives, enterprise SAS/SATA (works with Velociraptor outside of icepack), and of course SSD. 🙂

The fan is VERY loud (after all they are designed for a server) but can be removed/unplugged and a jumper configured to silence the locked rotor alarm, etc.

Mines by SNT, its not bad, but its less then 100 dollars and has a fan setting from low which is quiet to high, which can get whinny.
However with SSD's i see no reason why u couldn't set it at low. High was intended to be used with WD's 15k 2.5" SAS drives.
Ruby were they called servo? serio? ugh.. i forget there name.

as you can see i dropped a ton of money on my IO.. and i refuse to repeat it until after ICH11R. 😛

But OP, mobile backplane's are tight. 😀

I've had one of those - came as a sample and I promptly returned it. 😛

The fans in that are nothing compared to the SM. Fans are completely unnecessary with SSDs. Should be find with non 15K drives too.

WDC does not have any 15K products. You are thinking of Seagate's Saavio series of 2.5" disks. Fastest (mechanical) i/o. They sound neat too. Speaking of sound I miss the sound of all those drives working and will be building a synthesizer module which will take drive activity (SGPIO) directly from the host and produce a click of variable intensity to simulate actuator movement.

The nice thing about the SM is it uses a true SAS connector so you have just cables going to it - a single four pin Molex and SAS 4X. Mine shipped with a SAS by SATA (has four SATA lines) but I run straight SAS so I had to order another cable.

The other design has SATA connectors you need a MINISAS to SATA fanout cable. Some of these cables can cost half as much as the mobile rack which is a rip off. I guess you can make your own if you have the time. 😉

They do come in black! I'm looking at one right now.
Most drives WILL show activity when being accessed as well. Does not matter if you're using ICH or another host.

If you wanted to go cheap, you can just use double-sided tape to stick the SSD wherever you have room in the case. That's what I did for mine, seemed to work alright. 😛

The best backplane "rackmout" 5.25" enclosures I've found are the AMS models.

They are not "pass-through" They have a power button to turn on/off each individual drive bay, and when all are turned off, the fan stops, yay!

True, but the LED's on the enclosure can be seen without opening up the case. As for ICH11R I was interested in that because of native USB3.0 and SATA3 support.

The LEDs are actually on the backplane itself. The drive carriers have lightpipes that direct the LED output to the front where it can be seen by the user/operator.
