Low gas (although not right now), plus a retardedly high priced used car market + lucrative incentives (72 months 0%) = good new sales for full size trucks.

I make good money, but I still can't bring myself to pay the $35k+ that a decently well optioned 4x4 fullsize crew cab stickers for.

I ride my bike through a couple Ford/GM/Toyota dealerships once a week and notice the Ford and Toyota lots are almost always full of new/different trucks, the GM lots definitely not as much.

Sometimes I look at those 'Harley Davidson' branded F150s or totally optioned out trucks they put out at the front of the dealership and see ~$50-60K.

apparently 75% of full sized trucks are purchased by small business owners (though how much that has to do with giant tax credits and the trucks are really personal i dunno), so a rebound in full size truck sales means small business could be seeing a pick up in business.

the dealers quoted in the article don't expect the "suburban cowboy" to come back.

People are so fucking stupid.

Don't come bitching to me the next time gas prices are $5/gallon because it costs you $100 to fill up every 3 days.

Been looking for a used one myself. The used car/truck prices are definitely higher than they were. But I don't see me spending $35,000 for a new one either.

Jules, did you get woke up in the middle of the night by an aftershock or something? Or, are you always that nasty?

Definitely stupid. These truck buyers should shut-up and by Priuses to carry their landscaping equipment and tow their equipment. *rolls eyes*

ONLY if you buy a truck for fuel efficiency should you be labeled for stupidty. And that is true regardless of fuel prices.

Don't bitch about the mileage tax when it happens, then.

That's another insanely stupid idea. Let's tax the cars that get great mileage thereby eliminating the advantages of buying fuel-efficient environmentally friendly cars. Why not tax bicycles too, after all, they do so much damage to the roadways.

Wait, don't tell me you think any of the green and/or fuel efficiency "solutions" are actually about saving gas.

People buy fuel efficient cars to save money on gas. Institute a mileage tax and you remove one of the major advantages of buying a fuel efficient vehicle.

I didn't subscribe so I didn't see the rest. And yeh, I think there are some definite liberties taken with the "small business owner" aspect. I see trucks & suvs all over town with different logos on them. There's a guy I see pretty regularly who drives an H2 with his karate academy logo on the back. I'm sure that gets classified under "small business". Same goes for the shadetree snowplowers and landscaping crews that do just enough jobs a year to get the writeoff.

i don't subscribe either. the way to read wall street journal articles for free is to go to google news and search for the title. there's a limit but i've not reached it.

Well, who is polluting more? A modern V8 pickup driven 5K miles per year, or a Honda Fit driven 15K miles per year?

Oh come on...that's like asking which tastes better apples or oranges? Let's do a fair comparison here, which pollutes more? A modern V8 pickup driven 15k miles per year, or a Honda Fit driven 15k miles per year?

This is great news! Just in time for me to read this morning oil prices hit their 18 month record. Raise your hand if you love 14 MPG city.

LOL, that was pretty much the gist of my posts. Hey $3/gallon is cheap right and look at how much money I SAVED on this gas guzzling Canyonero I just bought! :D

People can be so short-sighted sometimes. It just amazes me.

Any reason to believe that gas WON'T hit $5/gallon in the next 3-4 years? There will be some supply issue or natural disaster that will spike oil prices and then we'll see people complaining with 4-5 threads a day on high gas prices...just like last time, and the time before that, and the time before that.

Jules hates everything that's bigger than a small sedan. Likes to troll and say there's no point to owning anything bigger than a small sedan. You should generally just ignore him in any thread that talks about trucks or SUVs.

Or they'll just do like they did last time, jack up the prices via the stock market. Who needs natural disasters? The price of oil has nothing to do with actual supply, not made up supply issues - ie. lower production to jack up demand so you can raise prices. Lower production costs + increased profits = win

Fact is that some people have a need for a truck. You're not going to be pulling a boat or a trailer up to the cabin etc with a Fit. At least around here there are tons of boats and tons of people with places a couple hundred miles away.

I guess my point was the price of gas has nothing to do with actual supply issues other than the supply of money going to the oil companies or the wall street broker. That's what irks me and I think a lot of other people about gas prices, it has nothing to do with running out of oil and everything to do with the rich getting greedier.

We were discussing a mileage tax. I drive my Hemi about 4.5K miles a year. Presumably I would pay far less tax than a Fit driven 15K per year because I'm polluting less and using the road less.

Obviously if both are driven 15K per year, there's nothing to discuss.

The new Chevy and Ford super duties just hit the lots too right? I know in January when I was looking almost no dealers had diesels left because the production was changing over.

So, almost a "drive for $5" if you will ;)

I don't think we'll see $5 gas for at least six or seven years. The weak global economy can't support it.

I'm saying I oppose a mileage tax simply because it is a disincentive to buying environmentally friendly cars.

It is easier to buy a car that gets better mileage when your current car reaches that point where it no longer makes sense to keep putting money into it than it is to sell your home and move closer to your job so for many people moving every time they change jobs isn't really an option. Besides, a car that weighs 2700lbs does far less damage to the roadways than a 6000lb truck regardless of the miles per gallon so I'm fine with leaving the gas tax as it is now.
