I believe at least a portion of it is intentional and I think you can see that from how he deliberately shuts down and refuses to answer when he's cornered.

I don't think it is though, I think his brain actually shuts down and prevents him from answering. I believe you'd have to physically restrain him somewhere he couldn't escape, and 'reverse-five lights' the fuck out of him until his brain's drivetrain finally disengaged long enough for him to break down into fetal crying before finally accepting that his world view is simply wrong, and has been for his entire life.
