I used to track this way back when it happened, watching them try to get robots inside the reactors, etc. At what point does it become a matter of world security? Pretty much the most deadly fission products we can create are showing up all over the place, in our supplies.

3 generations and people are going to see some real problems I think. Cant imagine being one of the people that they make go into those reactors, usually only 15 minutes at a time. Time to shutdown the EPA?

What does the EPA have to do with the Japanese reactor?

Aren't we getting rid of it? lol They have been releasing reports and what not. The reactor is leaking TONS (literally i think) of radiation which flows to our west coast. It's a problem, no?

No lol That radiation is contained in the plant. They're getting very high readings because they are close to the melted fuel.

How much does radiation weigh again?

The Guardian
atmospheric readings as high as 530 sieverts an hour had been recorded inside the containment vessel of reactor No 2, one of three reactors that experienced a meltdown

Fake news? Do tell more.
It's the reaction and hysterics that are an issue, not the news.

This

The high readings are because the robots are almost finally on top of the core material.

You on the west coast are getting more radiation from walking outside, eating a banana, or sleeping next to someone than from Fukushima.

Obligatory XKCD

They still haven't even found all of the cores, as they have breached the containment units. Busted up reactor buildings don't contain radiation unfortunately. I haven't really been following it for a couple of years do maybe they already put sarcophagus' around them?

*facepalm

It's fake news, people. I questioned the legitimacy of this bullshit the moment my Fox News obsessed mother started pleading with me to look up this story. Stop giving-in to sensationalism, you fools!

3 reactors melted down, this guy post diagrams of completely new reactors. Does he have a diagram of an exploded reactor and how it works? Didn't the top pop right off one or two of them?

Drink or swim in the water? Lol sheeeeit

Here:
At Fukushima Daini, they got a robot close enough to measure the radiation level close to the "elephant's foot" -- the mass of slag that results when the reactor melts down. This was very high -- the article mentioned 530 Sieverts, but it's unclear what they mean, because Sieverts are a measure of biological damage, not radiation dose. Still, it's way high. (Reading news reports about these things can be very frustrating.)

As I understand it, the actual reactor did not "explode." It melted down. And yes, he did show pictures of a melted down reactor.

Technically, I think there was at least one hydrogen explosion. Not sure how the containment vessels were affected, though.

I remember a building with pools containing spent rods that exploded. The reactor cores didn't explode as far as I know. I don't think they even do that.

There were explosions in the reactor containment buildings, which is probably the source of the confusion.

How did they end up containing it?

It's in a structure that contains the vast majority of radiation. There is some measurable leakage, but it's within a shell that prevents instant death. As long as people stay at a distance they are OK. You may have read that some radiation has been detected quite some distance away but that's done by exceedingly sensitive equipment and far below meaningful levels. The fantastically high radiation which exists is effectively cut off from the environment.
