Because compared to the tsunami which precipitated the event, the only loss is economic in nature. Despite steeplerot's screaming and ranting about poisoning the earth for eternity, the contamination released is not significant outside the immediate vicinity of the plant. There is no evidence that chronic low dose radiation exposure causes cancer or genetic damage.
